Here in Canada we spend a lot on heating our homes. Double glazed windows are pretty much standard, as are 6 inch insulated cavity walls.
Before insulating your walls or attic (loft?) I would suggest you seal all plumbing and electrical penetrations with low or high expansion foam. If rodents are a problem in your area then put stainless stell wool in before the foam. It stops them knawing through the foam. A pencil sized hole will allow a lot of warm air to rise through the ceiling in the course of the winter.
If you are insulating a previously uninsulated space you will also need to paint the interior wall with a vapour barrier paint. Moisture kills the insulating value quite quickly.
One more inexpensive idea is to use the heat shrinkable clear plastic film, that adheres to the window frame with double sided tape. I used it on my double glazed windows and no frost, even at -30C.
Good luck everyone!

One of the best ways to save electricity around the home to keep your home warmer in the cold months. A great way of doing this is to invest in insulation such as cavity wall. The carbon and eventual cost savings of insulating our homes is terrific and typical savings for cavity wall insulation for example is:
    * Typical cost: £250
    * Typical carbon: 610kg
    * Typical payback: 2 years

What if you have an older 'solid wall' home. These can indeed be difficult and expensive to insulate, however there are methods other than external cladding.

Solid wall insulation can be performed in several ways, with the best being involving adding an extra layer to the inside face of exterior walls – either boards within a narrow wooden frame or a clever flexible material called Sempatap.
Either way it is expensive, and the return on investment is longer, but the carbon savings are great.
    *  Typical cost: £5,500 - £8,500 (internal) £10,500 - £14,500 (external)
    * Typical carbon: 2000kg
    * Typical payback: Varies, but normally at least 10 years

I think most people would agree that saving money is something “easier said than done”. Personally, I believe it’s a mind-set that needs to be developed by creating good money-saving habits.

Here are some things I’ve done to help change my spending habits:

-	Cooking more at home ? Eating out is very expensive especially if you do it a couple times a week
-	Shopping online ? You can find better deals than in the store and you save on gas (I recommend http://www.shoptivity.com)
-	Paying the full balance on credit cards each month ? Interest charge is like giving away free money
-	Don’t forget to pay yourself ? Set up an online savings account (they pay higher interest than a normal savings account)
-	Setting a budget and goals ? It’s good to have your goals written down so you see them everyday and don’t lose focus on your ultimate objectives

Again, saving money requires a lot of patience and hard work. However, you’ll thank yourself later on in life. Good luck everyone!! =)

I just had a powerworks installed by an electrician,and it has already paid for itself with all the money I have saved on my electric bill,I have saved 40 percent on my electric bill since last year wich is alot of money since I have electric heat.I don't understand why everyone doesn't have this technology',maybe cause it is fairly new.The website for information on powerworks is at www.ecoquestintl.com/norwich
