2011 May product recalls – Each and every month a slew or items and products are recalled. May 2011 was no exception and although most are recalled for caution only there are some serious reasons to keep an eye on what is happening. Let’s take a look over some of this months recalls.

This is by no means an infinitive and final recall list for May but it’s a good place to start and you may recognise something you picked up this month or even before (some recalls are for older items).

May 2011 Food Recalls

  • Winfrey’s Olde English Fudge Inc. recall distributed in Massachusetts because they contain undeclared egg.
  • #1 Gluten Free brand chocolate and yellow cake mix recall for #1 Gluten Free brand cake mix Lot codes 33310-4). They contain undeclared milk.
  • GFS Marketplace Stores pecan pieces recall for GFS pecan pieces Lot 095 1094). The GFS pecan pieces may contain walnuts (which doesn’t seem that bad an issue to me!).
  • Tri-State bakery bread recall for products purchased before May 2 due to undeclared soy products.
  • Target Market Pantry Cookies recall for items sold since March 2011. Target Market Pantry snickerdoodles have been recalled due to undeclared whey.
  • Doctor’s CarbRite Diet bars peanut allergy alert due to the Universal Hi Protein bars recall for containing undeclared peanuts.Bars expiring up to June 30th 2012.
  • Brownie Fudge Twirl recall. This is due to an egg allergen alert.
  • Entenmann’s Pop’ems and Bimbo Donitas. These Bimbo donuts products have mold concerns.
  • Goodness Gardens chives for a Listeria monocytogenes contamination possibility scare.
  • Mountain Pure bottled water for products codes 2200 through 0400 for a possible biological contamination.
  • Quenby Hall Blue Stilton Cheese for items with expiry June 15-29. The Schratter Foods recall is related to a possible listeria contamination.
  • Natural Grains and Nature’s Own and Sweetbay recalls and Cobblestone Mill 16 oz 100% Whole Wheat Bread recall. Beest by of May 11 or 12. This is due to a Flower Foods bread issue that they may contain small pieces of metal!
  • “Egg-free” Cinderella Sweets Passover Cookies had a problem because they contained egg.
  • Six L’s Packing grape tomatoes recall. Affects all products containing their grape tomatoes which includes Safeway signature salads and anything from Manufacturer Taylor farms. No illnesses have been reported.
  • May 2011 Meat Recalls

    Bloaters and salted smoked split herring recall lot # 274 10. Porky Products herring recall was related to a botulism risk.

    Smithfield portobello mushroom pork loins recall for USDA mark of inspection on the label and EST. 413 or EST. 18079 . Related to containing undeclared whey.

    J. Gumbo’s Stir the Pot Chicken products lot numbers “P-38461. The J. Gumbo’s recall is for undeclared anchovies.

    Butterfield Foods bbq recall for beef, pork and chicken. There was a Butterfield Foods undeclared soy issue.

    The Rose & Shore Meat Company ready to east pastrami for lot numbers 20911-20941) had a possible listeria contamination. Togo’s pastrami was also affected by this.

    May 2011 Children’s Clothing and Toy Recalls

    El Gringo Imports sweaters  sold at Pike Place Market between November 2009 to August 2010. El Gringo Imports recall is relate to astrangulation hazard. Can be easily fixed by just removing the drawstring.

    Toy Story 3 bowling game sold in Walmart, batch JA 148 for a violation of lead paint standards.

    Falls Creek infant slipper socks recall sold at Meijer between June 2009 and March 2011 for a possible choking hazard.

    Radio Shack Danbar Knight Hawk Helicopters recall due to one report of a fire.

    Target, JCPenney, Meijer and H.E. Butt  Kiddieland trike recall. Kiddieland plastic trikes are being recalled related to due to possible facial lacerations. A ”Kiddieland Lights” “Sounds Children’s Scooters” recall is also happening.

    May 2011 Children’s Gear Recalls

    Justice stores beaded curtain recall sold between August 2010 and March 2011 for Tween Brands beaded curtain. A for risk of entrapment and strangulation.

    Sandbox Medical pacifier clips fo choking hazard. Items sold in February and March 2011.

    Dorel Asia bunk beds, collapse and fall hazards. Seven reports of minor bruises or abrasions received.

    Maclaren strollers recall recalled for possible fingertip amputations.

    CPSC alert for Phil & Ted’s Metoo Clip-On Chairs issued, items sold since May 2006. Phil & Ted’s Metoo Clip-On Chairs had fall and amputation hazards!

    DucDuc fixed side crib recall The “crib rails can separate”. The DucDuc recall is for AJ, Austin, Cabana, Campaign and Parker models.

    May 2011 Pharmaceutical Recalls

    Pentrexyl Forte Natural Lot No: 102050 expiring April 2014 in Texas. Pentrexyl Forte Natural recall is for misleading packaging.

    Coumadin recall with expiry Sept. 30, 2012 due to higher potency than expected.

    Caffeine and Sodium Benzoate  for treating breathing problems caused by overdose of drugs or alcohol with February 2014 expiry. Due to visible particulates.

    May 2011 vehicle recalls

    Kohler Courage engine in Husqvarna, Cub Cadet and Troy-Bilt. Recall is due to a laceration hazard.

    2011-2012 Western Star 4900 recall for an airline defect.

    2004-2007 model year Kia Spectras recall. The gas tank can fall down!

    2010 Hyundai Tucson recalled for bad reflectors.

    2011 Kia Sorento recall with a misaligned drive shaft Also. 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe also affected.

    Honda 2001 through 2003 recall due to defective airbags.

    2007-11 Toyota Tundra recall. Tire pressure sensors need to be repaired.

    2011 GMC Savana 1500 recall due to faulty right rear brake hose. This also affects other models.

    May 2011 Electrical Item Recalls

    Ryobi sheet sanders recall due to 31 reports of broken fan pieces, two reports of lacerations.

    Research In Motion Ltd. RIM Playbook sold in Staples due to an operating system flaw.

    May 2011 consumer product recalls

    Pig Ears for Pet Treats recall, Boss Pet pig ear recall. Keys Manufacturing Company (who make the treats) for potential salmonella contamination. For Keys pig ears, one dog illness reported.

    Meijer sold Katie Brown tea light set recall for items sold October 2010 through to March 2011 for a potential fire hazard.

    New York and New Jersey Telstar and Electra energy saving bulbs recall. Energy saving spiral and U shaped bulbs for two reports of fires.

    2011 May product recalls  - It’s a good idea to keep up to date with these as you never know when it may affect something you have purchased. Of course always check with your manufacturer or the place of purchase to confirm the recall. Let us know if you know of any other major recalls.
