2012 World’s Worst Places to Live
2012 World’s Worst Places to Live – Poverty, crime, disease, uninhabitable climates– these are the elements that constitute some of 2012′s worst places to live in the world.
It’s not an easy time for anyone on Earth right now. With high inter-government tensions, economic despair and an overall hazy environmental future, it’s not looking particularly peachy for any global citizen. Still, some people have it indisputably worse. Some people have it so bad that we in the rest of the world will never be able to fully comprehend how terrifying daily life is.
2012 World’s Worst Places to Live
Some of the world’s worst places to live in 2012 are the following:
Mogadishu, Somalia – Ravaged by years of civil war. A homebase for pirates. Street traffic negotiated by machine guns. Mogadishu or “Mog” has earned its reputation for being the worst place to live on Earth by the sheer levels of danger that exist within its walls. Wiki Travel states:
“Mogadishu is regarded as the most lawless and dangerous city on Earth and is currently experiencing a major food and refugee crisis. It is not safe for leisure or tourism. If you are planning a visit for international aid work, etc, you will need expert advice and planning.”
Cite Soleil, Port-au-Prince, Haiti - While it struggled long before the earthquake, the damage since seems irreversible. At the heart of Port-au-Prince lies one of the largest slums in the world: Cite Soleil. No sewers, electricity, schools or healthcare centers. Such is the life for thousands of Haitians who must live within this abject poverty and crime it breeds.
Ciudad Juarez, Mexico – It’s been called the “murder capital of the world”. Sitting on the American-Mexican border, Ciudad Juarez is a mix of drug violence, corrupt and incompetent government, and poverty. It’s key location next to the United States has made it a place where drug cartels battle for power.
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – Incredibly diverse (820 languages spoken, the world record) and set in a somewhat lovely, tropical location, Ports Moresby still remains one of the worst places to live on Earth. A snippet from Gadling sums up the city’s pain in a nutshell:
“Rapes, Murders, and HIV are just a few of the daily tragedies that befall this enclave at the edge of the map. Here, even riding in cars is a dangerous activity. Gangs called Raskols are known to rob vehicles transporting foreigners at gunpoint.”
Other places on Earth that made the 2012 “worst” list:
- Harare, Zimbabwe
- Dhaka, Bangladesh
- Lagos, Nigeria
- Algiers, Algeria
The worst places to live in America:
El Centro, California
Cleveland, Ohio
Detroit, Michigan
Once you start thinking about the poverty and terror so many people of the world have to live in, it makes you realize how lucky we really are. Many of you reading this post don’t have to worry about rampant disease, clean water or being murdered in the streets. It’s important that we attempt to keep a level of awareness about what others around the world must endure not only to keep ourselves more humble, but to also try to be part of the solution.
Let’s hope that one day some of these “worst places” to live in the world become more inhabitable and the people experience a level of comfort and prosperity.

You know you’re in bad company when you appear on a list with the likes of Mogadishu and Algiers. Not only is Juarez the murder capital, it is the kidnapping capital. (How’s that 30-year war on drugs going?)

Juarez is a scary place indeed. It’s a shame that essentially drugs have ruined the lives of thousands of innocent people. Thanks for your comment, Mike!

I think that there are plenty of good people living in these awful conditions, so I’m not sure if I agree with you, but thanks for your input! It’s definitely a complicated issue and innumerable opinions on the matter.

Give me a break. I live in El Centro, and it is not that bad. I love how people who have never been here think they can just tell everyone how terrible it is. Yes, we have extremely high unemployment, a result of a large population of low skill migrant labor and a seasonal economy, but it is far from a terrible place. It is very safe and since I moved here 2 years ago I’ve found it very friendly. There are complex issues that have led to the poverty here in the Imperial Valley and I’m not interested in starting a debate, but the thing is people here are just like people everywhere else in America.

Jeff, thanks for giving us your viewpoint. I have not visited much of the USA yet but am certainly interested in going pretty much everywhere despite what people say.
