$330,000 for white truffles

I don’t know if you have ever eaten truffle before. I have (not sure what type though) and I must say I like it but not enough for me to shell out a hefty sum for truffles of any sort. Even Italy’s prized white truffles! So when a recent auction saw one man pay $330,00 for white truffles I had to read more.

Why did a man pay $330,000 for white truffles?

Luckily this story panned out good and wasn’t just a complete act of gluttony (as far as I can tell).

Stanley Ho a Billionaire Casino owner won (through representatives of his company Sociedade de Jogos de Macau) two of the rare and sought after white truffles at a charity auction this past Saturday (27th Nov 2010). One of the truffles weighed almost two pounds but his purchase was equal to what he paid for just one truffle in the same auction last year.

The charity truffle auction included 16 lots and raised $373,500 for charities in Britain, Italy and Macau making what at first seems like a ridiculous waste of cash a lot more worthwhile in my eyes.

Turning the story a little towards my thoughts I realise how when I read the headline I judged the businessman for his actions and waste of money, especially in a time when money seems scare. However I guess it is his money and even outside of a charity auction he has thr right to pay what he wants for a white truffle and I should not have judged him for such a thing!
