As some of you know I just started a project to look at the cost of living in all the US States. As research I thought it would be cool to see what the American Cities with the Highest Cost of Living are. I’ll do this by looking over a few key factors.
American cities with most expensive real estate
Real estate costs are always a good indicator of how expensive it is to live somewhere as you have to buy or rent (which is normally somewhat relative to real estate costs). It’s always a huge chunk of your salary (for a normal person).
According to Househunt.com these are the 10 most expensive cities for real estate in USA with average property prices from around $4million-$6million! Astounding!
- Beverly Hills, CA
- Palm Beach, FL
- Laguna Beach, CA
- Captiva, FL
- Boca Raton, FL
- Rancho Santa Fe, CA
- Belvedere, CA
- Cherry Hills Village, CO
- Tiburon, CA
- Hillsborough, CA
American cities with highest taxes
Taxes are hard to work out but the general consensus seems to be that New Yorkers pay the most in taxes overall with all taxes factored in. Below are a few little bits broken down for you.
According to Wikipedia Chicago has the highest total sales tax in the US at a whopping 9.75%. California is the highest sales tax states so you can bet any cities in CA are high on the list too.
A top tier rate of 11% income tax can be found in any cities within Oregon and Hawaii so they are places to avoid if you can!
Forbes say that Westchester County, NY pay the most property tax followed by Marin County, CA, Loudon County, VA and Lake County, Il.
US Cities with highest car insurance premiums
Car insurance can actually be really high in a place that is otherwise cheap to live (high crime, over population etc etc) but it’s still going to be another chunk of change from the salary so worth knowing. Examiner dot com has an excellent list showing the highest premiums in the USA. These are the top 10 cities:
- Newark, New Jersey
- New Orleans, Louisiana
- Wilmington, Delaware
- Baltimore, Maryland
- Providence, Rhode Island
- Louisville, Kentucky
- Huntington, West Virginia
- Jacksonville, Florida
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- Bridgeport, Connecticut
What other stats would you like to see?
This article could go on forever but I hope you get the drift so far that basically New York, Florida and California are the expensive States in general but you have to be careful has American Cities with the Highest Cost of Living hide in almost every State…. I would love to expand this article and make it as useful as possible so please give me your input.
