Basic Tomato Sauce Recipe (With Video)

basic tomato sauceToday I thought I would post another simple, easy and healthy video recipe. This basic tomato sauce is a staple for me. I use variations of this recipe as base for many meals and throw batches in the freezer for quick and easy dinners. It’s similar to the spaghetti sauce recipe that I posted a while back but even easier :) .

Basic Tomato Sauce Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 10 fresh medium tomatos
  • 1 medium onion
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • A handful of fresh basil
  • A pinch of salt (to taste)
  • Tablespoon of balsamic vinegar (optional, to taste)
  • Tablespoon of olive oil

Method:

  • Roughly chop the tomatos, onions, garlic and basil.
  • Add a tablespoon of olive oil to a large pan and heat to medium heat.
  • Add the onions and garlic and fry until onions are browing and slightly see through.
  • Add in the tomatoes, cook for 10-20 mins stirring occassionally and crushing the tomatoes as they soften with a wooden utensil.
  • Add the balsamic (optional), salt and basil.
  • Cook for another 10 min minimum
  • (Optional) Use a hand blender to blend the sauce into a smooth sauce. of course it’s nice chunky too!
  • (Optional) turn down the heat and simmer for an hour to several hours (water may need adding to stop it from burning and getting too thick.

As you can see this really is basic. All sorts of vegetables (red pepper and zucchini work great) can be added for different flavours or you can store this base sauce and expand on a per meal basis. Adding curry powder to a batch makes a quick curry sauce and adding capers and olives makes a quick putenesca sauce…. Very easy.

Bon appétit!

Please let me know if you make this sauce or have your own variation. As always I love your comments and feedback :) .

Yes, tomatoes are very healthy because they are rich in vitamin C and lycopene. When I do make salsa, I see to it I have picked fresh ones in the market.
