Best Christmas movies

Best Christmas moviesI was never much into Christmas carols and other such holiday shenanigans as a kid but what I did love was waiting for my best christmas movies to be shown and eating as many mince pies as I could! The entire run up from now until the big day through to new year is packed full of great classics that get shown year after year. And most of the times these can be found on regular stations so you don’t need any expensive cable subscriptions to enjoy them! I thought it would be fun to share my faves and probably get beat up in the comments again like I did with my Zagat best movies post!

My best Christmas movies about Christmas

Bad Santa - Do not let your kids watch this movie! But do watch it yourself, it’s disgusting, distasteful and heart warming and Billy Bob Thornton does an excellent job at playing someone who might be quite like himself!

Elf - Elf is sweet and one the kids can watch thank goodness. I like to pretend I don’t like many Will Ferrel movies but you can’t help liking this one even if it is a little silly.

Santa Claus The Movie – I loved this movie as a kid so it still holds charm for me with John Lithgow as the perfect bady and the much missed Dudley Moore.

Scrooged – You have to love Bill Murray’s take on this old tale. It’s funny but still carrying the original message. The scene where Joe Pesci is dead and frozen always struck me as a youngster.

My best Christmas movies not about Christmas

By this I mean movies that were always shown at Christmas and that I always looked forward to seeing again.

The Goonies – This movie was on every holiday and I would scour through the TV schedule to make sure I didn’t miss it even though I also owned it on VHS. There is just something special about watching a movie constrained by the TV schedule! Still today I love the feeling of adventure and wise cracking kids and can watch it over and over.

Back to the Future Trilogy – You could always count on this trilogy being on and although I love the other famous trilogy this would be the one that excited me. I think it’s all down to Doc and I can’t wait for the upcoming Adventure Game from Telltale games that will be featuring his fine acting. The first is still probably the best one.

Running Man – I have not seen Running Man for years but thinking back on what movies used to excite me this was one I loved. Arnie’s acting is awful and the script is poor but the movie rocks even more because of it (ok maybe not!). The story is very reflective of current society though!

Your favorite Christmas movies

Now it’s time for you to contribute and make this list well rounded. Different folks have different faves and I would love to hear which ones both Christmas related and non Christmas related that you would sit down and watch every year.

If I am forced to watch A Christmas Story one more time… it won’t be good.

Giving another nod for National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, it just isn’t Christmas without a watch. Also Jingle All The Way is a favorite of mine because I’m a big Arnie fan. “Put that cookie DOWN!!” And I love that you mentioned The Running Man. Good stuff.

Interesting that none of the films on your list is more than twenty five years old. Check out the classic movie channels sometime and you may find yourself adding more titles.

Hey Leah, I love old movies in general but love new ones too…. I guess I could have added some of the classics to the list.
