Careers After 60

Careers After 60 - For many people the prospect of pursuing a new career after 60 seems impossible. They’ve spent their whole life working hard and so starting over again (when so close to the age of retirement ) is an exhausting prospect.

I personally think that no-one should let age get in the way of a fulfilling work life. Your 60′s should be a time that you work for yourself– whether you’re doing something you love, or starting your own business, or sharing your abilities with the community.

Before we get into great careers for people after 60, I think it’s important to talk about the prospect of retirement. Everyone is entitled to retirement after a long working life, but sometimes continuing to work is in your best interest. There are plenty of studies that show that people who retire earlier are more likely to die sooner.

So, I guess I’m just trying to say that keeping active and having career goals after 60 can actually be good for you. Just make sure you’re spending these years working hard at something you love.

Let’s take a look at some great, common career choices for people after the age of 60.

Teacher - It’s no secret that with age comes experience. If you’re looking for a more fulfilling way to end your working career, why not teach something that you’re knowledgable about? Your years in your previous field will give you invaluable

Social Entrepreneur - According to PBS, many older people in the workforce are starting their second career as “social entrepreneurs”.

“A social entrepreneur, in our view, is a person or entity that takes a business approach to effectively solving a social problem. We call this approach an “enterprising idea.” Borrowing from the collaborative approach that often distinguishes social entrepreneurs, we also offer the following definitions from a variety of reputable sources.”

Work for Charity - For some people, money isn’t as much of an issue in their golden years as before. If this is the case, you might want to consider working to make change in the world by looking for a job in charity. They may not pay as much, but often times these kinds of gigs have decent benefits. Check out Idealist.org for non-profit work.

My Mom is coming up on 60-years of age and is planning on starting her own cafe. I think it’s fantastic. Of course it’s a huge risk and financial undertaking. Many people over 60 might find this to be too stressful, but she’s so passionate about the idea that I’m completely behind her new career choice (she works in cancer research now). I think it will make her very happy, and to me that’s what’s the most important thing.
