Summer is here and anyone with any money available in their budget will undoubtedly be thinking of siphoning some off to get a break and go on holiday. So for all us frugal folks finding some good cheap summer travel destinations. I already wrote a little about this in my article on Cheap Vacation Ideas but I wanted to be a little more specific if possiblle.
The actual cheap summer traveling
The first part of getting to your travel destination on a reasonable budget is finding transport for low cost. Things that have to be considered are how much fuel will be if driving, parking and if you need to hire a car. If flying you need to find
USA Today have written a pretty cool article “Cheap Tricks for Summer Travel” that deals mainly with actually getting there. It talks about ways to ensure low fuel costs, ideas for getting cheap flights and other things such as ideas for getting cheaper hotels and taking mid week leave and come home dates…. All great advice here.
Cheap vacation destinations in USA
Most readers of this blog already live in USA so it makes a lot of sense on saving by staying closer to home (if you live up North Canada isn’t a bad idea in many ways). Gas isn’t at it’s cheapest but a long road trip to a cheap destination isn’t a terrible idea on my books and there are so many things to do on your door steps if you are not up to that.
Staycations – This is kind of a new growing trend. Staycations involve staying at or close to home and just going on day trips to explore local areas. You know you can count at least 10 places within an hour or two of your house that you would like to visit! So consider doing this without any hotel costs, cheap home cooking food and picnic costs and really getting to know your local history. You may even be able to consider showing some visitors around, having some friends from out of state to come or even some foreign visitors that you host.
Finding a cheap destination – I have written a fair bit about the cheapest places to live in America and I think it’s fair to say that the areas that are cheap to live in are likely to be cheap to stay in for a vacation. You could rent a local small B&B or even consider a house swap for a short time.
An actual destination, Texas - I have been hearing a lot about Texas recently and it’s just sounding more and more like a great destination for cost and sheer things to do. It sounds like prices are all reasonable and culture is growing at a great rate. Influences in the South and a varied history mean there are always plenty of things like museums, festivals, art and music events. The only downer in the summer could be the crazy heat!
Cheap vacation ideas out of country!
Canada…. If you are in the top part of USA then Canada is very accessible by car and although some of the cities are not extremely cheap the rural areas are beautiful and can be very affordable. In the West you have Vancouver area and then above New England you have awesome Quebec where you can get arguably the best maple syrup, find places that ONLY speak French and your 18 year old kids can legally have a beer!! I lived in Montreal for 2 years and it is very very affordable with an absolute ton of things to do in the summer. Many free festivals, cool bars and lot’s of cool areas to see.
Egypt… I live in Cairo now. If you can find a cheap air fare here then it’s super cheap if you stay away from the tour companies and tourist restaurants. I wrote a whole post about taking a budget Egypt vacation with my personal experiences.
