Drop Leaf Kitchen Table

I was recently thinking about the war generation and how they were far more practical and frugal then our generation have ever been…. I’m english so by the war generation I mean World War II.

My Grandma always had a drop leaf kitchen table and from a frugal standpoint it acted as more than one piece of furtniture saving space and money.

The drop leaf table is a fantastic invention. Just in case you have no idea what I am talking about, I mean one of those tables with flaps either side. They are small but are able to be explanded to become a fair sized dining table.

So you can keep it stored in the corner of your kitchen or dining room area, even use it to store the letters or magazines. But when space for the family to eat is needed it can be moved to the center of the room, opened out and used to have a good old fashioned family meal. You can use it for much more though… such as family crafts, parties and anything else you can think of.

The main problem with my grandma’s drop leaf table was it’s nasty 1960’s design… Luckily modern versions and more classic wood finished versions are available to suit any home… Plus for those like me on a budget you can easily pick up a new or used table at a reasonable price from places like ebay.com or Ikea.

So what do you think about the space saving and money saving of the drop leaf kitchen table? Leave a comment or visit out Frugal Living Forum to continue the discussion.

Granny tables! Not really my thing, I’m afraid. Give me a four-seater with an extension piece any day of the week!

I have had a drop leaf table for 15 years that I bought and refinished from a junk store. I have lived in small apartment to a house. It has worked well wherever I have lived. It doubles as my sewing table, project table, craft table for the kids.
