As May 21st, known by some as the ‘day of rapture’ approaches people are abuzz discussing various end of the world theories. I’m not sure if I subscribe to any of them, but if there’s one thing that’s certain it’s that all cultures and creeds believe that there will eventually be an end to human existence.

Below are some End of the World Theories:

Mayan Calendar 2012 – The Mayan Calendar ends on December 21st and some people have decided to interpret this as signifying the end of the world as they were successful predicting other things. Other people say it’s a cyclical calendar that just starts over again.

Day of Rapture – May 21st, 2011 is the day some people believe rapture will begin where God’s selected people are taken to heaven. On October 21st a great fire will wipe out the rest of us.

Big Rip Theory – A scientific prediction of the end of the world involving the rate of the universe’s expansion and hypothesizes that  the dark energy of the universe eventually tearing us and our world apart. Fun.

Qiyamah – The Islamic perspective on the last judgement. The order in which it will occur is the destruction of all creatures, then the resurrection of the body and finally the judgement of all sentient creatures.

Many people believe that the world will eventually end — as long as we’ve been around we’ve been predicting how it’s all going to end. It’s natural for people to think about life as a cycle, I just hope that no one is too worried or worrying others too much about this. All you can ever do is live each day as if it were your last, and try not to be paranoid about it, but rather let this inspire you to pursue a fulfilling life. Whether the end is neigh or not, treat yourself and those you love well.

I think it’s much more likely that humans die by destroying ourselves thru nuclear warfare than any of those other theories
