Keeping mistresses seems like something that has been relatively common for famous, powerful and royal men throughout history. I guess on the one hand men who wield a lot of power have greater resources for philandering — it’s just somewhat stomach turning. I know historically speaking a lot of marriages were for political reasons and not for love. And in some cases these mistresses would end up becoming very powerful in their own right.

That being said– I still don’t quite understand how people can cheat on one another. Inflicting that kind of emotional pain and showing a blatant disrespect for your partner is just horrible. How can we do this to one another and why does it seem like it will continue throughout humans time on earth?

Let’s take a look at some of these mistresses to royal men before diving into the uncomfortable topic of infidelity.

Anne Boelyn

Probably the most famous mistress of UK history, the woman started an affair with Henry while he was still married. Their affair and her consequent pregnancy are the reason that Henry annulled his marriage to Catherine and tied the knot with his mistress. She later of course suffered the terrible fate of execution.

Camilla Parker-Bowles

Charles and Camilla– a story everybody knows and many people who were fond of Diana, have found heartbreaking. Charles always loved Camilla and after his separation with Diana was finally able to be with her legitimately. Yet his infidelity impacted the way many people viewed him, especially during the divorce.

Carolina Otero

Also known as La Belle Otero, she was involved with not only Edward the VII but also Albert I of Monaco. She was a Spanish dancer and caused quite a stir among within various royal families.

Okay, so these are just a few examples of royal mistresses. Obviously modern times have not impacted how common affairs seem to be. Like I stated earlier, while I understand infidelity is probably part of human nature, I still can’t understand how someone would consciously cheat on their partner.

If you’re interested still being with many people, perhaps you should have never committed to a relationship in the first place. That’s just what I think, anyway.

People are so concerned with their own happiness and not for the well being of others in their lives. This applies to the cheating thing as well as other aspects of our lives. Treat the people you care about with love and respect and put yourself second. Infidelity not only hurts your partner, but it hurts other family members as well as friends who care about you.

That’s just my two cents anyway. I know this was a bit of an out-of-theme tangent for the site, but I suppose writing about Early Movie Star Scandals got me thinking about how people and their moral behavior haven’t really evolved over time. Perhaps it’s gotten worse with technology making it easier for people to be unfaithful. I don’t know, I can’t say. All I know is that I think love and respect for a commitment you’ve made is of the utmost importance.
