Forbes hip hop’s biggest earners of 2010
Posted on by Forest in General, Opinion
Hip hop has been around for close to 30 years now and it’s been through many guises to come out on top as a world wide mainstream musical style. Being a hip hop star now is synonymous with big cars, huge jewelry and ridiculous displays of wealth.
Not all hip hoppers are like this of course and as a fan of a vibrant and strong underground hip hop scene I think it’s important to acknowledge that is still truly is an art and the art of hip hop itself is not the thing that is earning many of these big timers their money.
As a recent article from MSN based on Forbes hip hop’s biggest earners of 2010 says the rise to the top of the earning scale has been more about business and less about spitting rhymes. All of the major players have built up a strong brand and have business empire that would impress Donald trump.
According to Forbes hip hop’s biggest earners of 2010
In at number one comes Jay-Z. I recently saw Jay-Z at a festival in Sweden and although I didn’t enjoy the music very much it’s clear that his career started with something more than money in his eyes. He clearly had a passion for performing and I think it’s important to note that passion is often the clincher in getting you to the top of any game. However his keen business sense has brought him into running Def Jam records and many many other business’s from Fashion labels to large endorsements with huge companies like Hewlett Packard.
Next up is 50 Cent. I can’t stand his music but he certainly managed to front a band and has spawned many business from his G-Unit brand going into clothing as well as ultra violent video games and more recently acting.
Number 3 is an old timer, Sean Coombes otherwise known as P-Diddy formerly Puff Daddy. Again I am not a fan of the music but I was surprised to see his name on an old Beastie Boys CD of mine. He has been been behind the scenes building up business through music for many years and more recently moving into clothing and I believe I saw a fragrance of his. Anyway he is all over the place!
We can’t forget others like Dr Dre, Eminem and Snoop Dog. Love em or like em you can’t knock their entrepreneurial spirit and their insight to seize an opportunity. I’m not into bling or any of that but I admire the rise many of them have made form humble beginnings.
I wish they could be a little more humble sometimes though, it could all go in a minute!
Enjoy this awesome song “Don’t let money change ya” by a great hip hop group called Blackalicious.

Why wasn’t 50 Cent included in this group? I believe he has made quite a bit of $$ this year especially since he had an endorsement with Vitawater and Automobile makers for the G6 automobile???

Hey Dwight,
Jay-Z isn’t so bad as some of them. Snoop has had his high’s and low’s but yes a lot of the top gangsta rappers could do with using their skills with a bit more candor!

Thanks Darren, people obviously care to some degree otherwise they would not comment! I like to give opinions on my website. If I was writing for a News Company then I would stick to facts not opinion.

Well, Mr/Ms Forest whatever you are…
U could not help to mention THREE times in a row that U are NOT a fan of “Hip Hop”, it sounds like U are moaning, probably some of your superior at work made U write good article about hip hop. Is there any other thing about hip hop or about its culture U DON’T LIKE that U dying to spit out? Then F……. spit it out!
Basically this looks more like a page of U moaning than a professional article.

Hey Wise G,
Yeah sorry about that
. Can’t help voicing an opinion. This is my own personal website so I write what I feel, no boss over my head.
I love Hip Hop just not very keen on many of the really popular gangsta’s. Sage Francis, Blackalicious, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul even some Eminem and Dre (although not so much).

Every one these individuals should collected. thrown into jail. There money given to the poor. These people are a disease that should be stamped out forever. Endless years of them sending the wrong message to our people.

Hey Jorge, If they had committed a crime by our law then yes they should be thrown in jail. Sadly I don’t agree with the way they influence some people either but it’s a free country, right? There is so much better and more conscious hip hop out there. Saying that Jay-Z isn’t as bad as some of them and he comes across quite a nice guy in interviews

Your article is supposed to be about the highest earning artists in the hip hop/rap genre, not your personal interset in that form of entertainment. The short time it took to read your article I became very irritated because I do not not care in any way, shape or form what type of music you, the writer, prefers. Leave your personal opinions to yourself and quit using it as filler for your articles.

If you’re not a fan…..or don’t know how to write an objective article stating facts only, perhaps you should’ve passed on the assignment.
I don’t care what it is you don’t like, I don’t need your peety jealousies and incessant complaining about what it you don’t like and the merits of subjective humility.
FACT: They earn a lot more than you’ll ever see in this lifetime and the next 10 to come. You don’t see me complaining. Why don’t you try it sometime.
THUMBS DOWN!!!!

Hey NikkiSix, if you read it I am actually complimenting them on their business skills. It’s my website so I like to add personal commentary. I am not a news site so I can write what I feel
.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.

What a bunch of clowns – hip hoppers and the sucker buying the crap. It’s not art. it’s not music. It should not be labeled as such. It should not be allowed at any music awards. It’s not music. Just a bunch of thugs rapping with bass in the bckground. Quit polluting our ears and minds.

Hey Vicor,
I don’t agree with their buying habits either but they earned the cash. Is it art? Sure it is, art is what you want it to be. I don’t like much of the hip hop these guys create but I won’t discount it as music or art.
You have to accept that things exist in this world that you will not personally like. I choose to listen to more conscious music myself and not stuff that is demoralizing women.
