Free Income Tax Help – If you’re feeling overwhelmed about preparing your income tax this year you’re in luck– the IRS offers free help in convenient centers around the country! Certain conditions apply, however it’s a fantastic opportunity for anyone who’s worried that they’re not filling out the paperwork correctly.

Free Income Tax Help

The IRS provides free income tax help for people who make $50,000 a year or less through two programs: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE).

For low- and moderate-income taxpayers, seniors, people with disabilities and non English speakers, the IRS is providing free tax help through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance  and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs. The IRS will set up VITA locations at community centers,  libraries and malls to assist taxpayers with filling out returns.”

You don’t need much to get the free help- just your typical tax preparation paperwork. The first step is figuring out what the closest center is, which you can do by checking out the following page of the IRS website. Once you’ve found the center closest to you, you must put all of the following together:

  • Proof of identification – Picture ID
  • Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration or
  • Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter for you, your spouse and dependents
  • Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
  • Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
  • A copy of last year’s federal and state returns if available
  • Proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit, such as a blank check
  • Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider’s tax identifying number (the provider’s Social Security Number or the provider’s business Employer Identification Number) if appropriate
  • To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.
This list was sourced from ABC News.

With a little bit of preparation, you can file your taxes more easily and cheaply than you might’ve initially imagined.  They’ll help you navigate the free online tax software, or just help you fill out the paperwork to submit. Also, if you’re a senior citizen then this center will help you with  tax deductibles for the elderly. I really believe that VITA and TCE are both definitely worth taking advantage of if you make 50,000 a year or less.
