Frugal Pumpkin Carving

Ways to spend less carving pumpkins this year or any year….

Everyone who celebrates Halloween loves carving pumpkins, but let’s face it, it’s an extremely wasteful activity. Wasting good food is never a good idea and buying a whole bunch of pumpkins can put a hole in the pocket too!

So here are some ways to save money, waste less and still get to carve pumpkins, almost, guilt free!

1. Grow Your Own – Pumpkins are relatively easy to grow. But it’s too late for this year. So start planning for next year!
2. Scoop Some Inside Flesh and Save It – If you just skim around scooping some flesh from the inside of the pumpkin then you may be able to scoop enough out to put aside for soup or pie.
3. Cut the Pumpkin In Half - I call these Carved Pumpkin Faces. You have a half for each person so you can hang these on walls or prop them up against flower pots, but you get two carves per pumpkin.
4. Better Still! Cut the Pumpkin in 3! If you split the pumpkin into 3 equal pieces (parallel cuts) then you end up with 2 faces and a large mid band that can be used for cooking.
5. Buy Smaller Pumpkins – A smaller pumpkin has taken less energy to grow and should be cheaper to buy but still look really cool when carved.
6. Compost All Used Pumpkins – You could use this years pumpkins to help make compost for next years crop.
