How I Lost Weight

how i lost weightI’m still not at my optimum weight but little by little I am getting there. However I have lost a fair amount over the last year and I wanted to share a post about how I shed the pounds.

Back story and how I lost weight

I have not been exactly skinny since I was in my early teens and throughout my adult life my weight has tended to be on the plumper side. I have never been massively obese but always needed to shed a few pounds. Sometimes more than others. However now I am closer to where I want to be than ever before.

My diet over the years

I have been vegetarian for about 10 years now. The problem with being vegetarian is the fact that to get protein you often need to eat twice the amount of carbs. This means keeping a close eye on your diet too as to get full it’s easy to load on carbs and fat. For much of my early adult life I never watched my eating and just ate reasonable food but with lots of weekend take aways and binge drinking one or two nights a week. Not the way to stay trim!

Exercise

I have always maintained a good level of health. I have always loved running and despite being overweight have run the London Marathon and at least 3 official half marathons that I can think of. I used to regularly use the gym for general workouts and have enjoyed periods of swimming. However apart from for races my goals have generally never been solid, changing exercise, schedules and taking the odd month off here and there.

Diet and Exercise Now…..

I made the decision I had to focus about 2 years ago whilst living in Canada. I just felt too unfit for me and needed to fix the diet and ct down on drinking a little. So I started swimming 2-3 times a week with laps goals in mind and doing a hard Yoga class every Monday. I loved it and my weight started creeping down. Along with cutting down my portions and being careful not to eat out I was heading in the right direction.

However then when it came time to leave Canada we was off to USA for a few months, UK for a few months and then here to Egypt. We treated these months as “Good Bye” months saying good bye to everyone via drinks, pizza, big home feasts and generally neglecting our bodies. I put all the weight back on despite the fact that I was keeping a regular running schedule.

On arriving in Egypt last August I had a barrage of new fatty street foods to indulge in. Hot hot sun and unsafe places to run. The weight stayed! At this point I weight around 105kg.

A few months into our live in Egypt I felt terrible. It was time to tackle this issue again and I started with a recommendation from a friend to start the workout program P90x. P90X was damn tough but I did it 6 days a week for 3 months. The weight really started to drop and although I was not being very tough on my diet (still over eating) I felt in great shape. I finished P90X at around 101kg. Almost the lightest I had been in a long while.

After P90X I took a few weeks off and I started a new program. If you follow this blog you will know that I have been posting updates about the Insanity home workout program and I love it.

Insanity is like P90X in that it’s set for a 2month period 6 days a week and it’s not for the feint hearted. The first round of Insanity went great with me dropping to around 98kg and feeling very fit.

I had a two week break to Sweden in between and when I got back I took a few weeks of light exercise before embarking on the current round.

Skip to now. I am almost on Month 2 of Insanity and my fitness is increasing. The last month my diet has been going well with regulated portions, much less eating out an an emphasis on getting complete protein from mixing vegetarian protein sources.

I am currently 96kg and have about 6kg more to lose.

I lost weight and am losing weight through focus and persistence. Be realistic but keep going and it will happen.

I hope you found my story about how I lost weight interesting and I would love as always to have some comments from you.

Well what an inspiration you are! Congrats on the huge effort. I haven’t looked up the Insanity work out program but it sounds demanding.

I could do with losing 6kgs to be super slim like I was pre-babies. We’ll be heading into our warmer months soon here in Australia and it’s always nice to be lighter in Summer I think. You’ve given me the kick I needed to get serious and I’m also vegetarian so your story is very relevant! Thanks!

Thanks Michelle :) . Just wanted to put some words to paper (or screen) about my efforts. Not the most elegant or informative post but just showing a real person making a real effort and not selling anything directly so people don’t get suspicious :) .

I don’t think it’s wrong to be a few pounds over if you have fitness but if it’s knocking your confidence or comfortability (I know what it can be like in hot weather) then it’s worth the effort to get it gone.
