How Much Coffee Should I Drink A Day? - With Canada even joining the giant coffee train with Tim Horton’s 24oz size and coffee drinking throughout the world generally being out of control you have to ask yourself how much can you drink every day and keep the habit healthy?
How Much Coffee Should I Drink A Day?
The health benefits of coffee have really been coming out recently with claims that it is good for keeping diabetes, dementia, Parkinson’s, heart disease and more at bay. It’s thought to help with dieters by suppressing hunger and keeping you regular. The caffeine is the main known element of that but a number of minerals such as magnesium, chromium and antioxidants.
If you drink it black or just with a little milk and only drink a couple of cups a day then it could well be doing you some good. But like anything there is likely a limit and it is possible to cross that healthy threshold!
Addiction and other issues related to caffeine are the things to watch out for, as well as drinking so much that you just pee yourself out in public or worse! For some people caffeine even causes constrictions of the throat and heart, something I suffer from a little myself if I consume too much caffeine.
A great article from the BBC followed up with some details after a teenager was taken to hospital due to an espresso overdose, she had shakes, was laughing and crying and heavy sweats along with burning up! She only had seven espresso coffees.
The article talks about how much caffeine is safe. It says that a normal cup of filter coffee contains roughly 120mg of caffeine, Instant has roughly 75mg and espresso roughly 107mg.
Caffeine can be lethal with it being about 90mg per two pints of blood for an average person. Luckily that is around 200 instant cups per day. That doesn’t mean that you can drink as much up to 200 as you want, obviously before it becomes lethal there are always other side effects.
Coffee could be affecting your sleep and you could even be addicted, two very unhealthy things. Some say anymore than 6 cups a day is enough to get you hooked and if you have trouble sleeping at all then the coffee could be the culprit and you may be drinking too much.
A slow withdrawal may well be needed and bringing yourself down to an amount somewhere around 2-3 regular sized cups a day.
Personally I can see and believe coffee is healthy. It feels good to drink 1-2 cups a day but with the absolutely huge sizes available now it is easy for anyone to get addicted and even overdose.
I think people really need to track what they are drinking and curb it if it seems excessive. It is easy to grab a coffee and seemingly healthier than a soft drink or any sugar filled beverage.
How much coffee do you think is healthy?

She “only had 7 espresso coffees”. Holy crap no wonder she lost it. I drink 2-3 normal sized cups spread throughout the day and have always felt it was safe. My wife thinks otherwise and I’ll be sending her the link to this post.

This is so true! Coffee is very healthy in moderation (if you drink it black), buuuuut like so many things it’s dangerous to go overboard!! I speak from experience; I used to drink 4-7 cups of coffee a day and developed a physical dependance (addiction) to it. I started drinking it daily in my first year of high school and am now 21. Caffeine addiction is not something you can just get rid of by toning it down, either. I cut myself back down to one a day after I had a two-week period of SEVERE cluster headaches every day. That was at least a year ago, and I still need my coffee every day unless I want a huge headache, shakes and to generally feel disgusting. I don’t want to cut out coffee altogether (because I like the taste and health benefits), but take it from someone who’s been there and DON’T go above 2 cups a day!!! You’ll develop a dependance and will be stuck with withdrawal for a loooooooong time! Caffeine dependance is serious business! Especially the headaches. I honest to God have PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION for these headaches, that’s how bad they are.

Wow N.L,, I am sorry you went through that and still have side effects. No addiction is good (not even to exercise!). I’m glad you are somewhat recovered but it sucks about the headaches.

I really wish articles would be correct with the amount of the new coffee at Tim Hortons. It’s 24oz not 26oz. I know it’s only 2oz but with all the freak outs people seem to be having lately about it being too much coffee and how unhealthy it is they need to get their facts straight.

Hi Kylee, sorry about the error, updating it now. I wasn’t necc saying it was too much, just that you do need to be careful! We are almost all guilty of drinking a little too much at times.

Coffee is not exactly what it is purpurted to be. The stimulating diet and drink of this age are not conducive to the best state of health. Tea, coffee, and tobacco are all stimulating, and contain poisons. They are not only unnecessary, but harmful, and should be discarded. They are poisonous to the system and ruinous to the physical, mental, and moral powers and should be discontinued from a health standpoint. Water is the best liquid possible to cleanse the tissues.

Hey Laval, agreed a completely pure diet would probably be best but humans have been using stimulants and various other things since nearly the beginning of time! Not saying it is right, just the way we are. We can be careful and still have them as part of a balanced life.
