How to Choose a College Major

If you are wondering how to choose your college major then it is clear you are not set on what you want to do in the coming years. This kind of problem can lead you into spending three or four years of your life slaving away, getting into debt and not doing your best in order to get a major that you just picked to get a major for the hell of it!

Getting a College Major is a big time and financial commitment as well as a lot of tough work so it requires some careful thought on your behalf.

Here are a few ideas to help you choose your major.

• Write down everything you would like to do for a job.
• Write down your hobbies
• Check out pay for the hobbies and jobs you would like to do
• Look at general majors that are in a rough area you like (ie media). You can specialize at masters level if you wish
• Ask friends, family or even forums what majors have been most helpful in certain career fields
• See what uni’s have the majors you are interested in and what the associated costs are

If you really have no clue and all roads are coming up blank then I would strongly suggest you defer for a year or so until you know. If you defer this could be a great opportunity to get some savings behind you and seriously reduce the chances of getting into large debt from college.
