Get some ideas for how to create a dazzling home light display and have some fun with the kids this week…
One thing I loved as a kid was a project with my parents. Putting up holiday lights and planning where everything will go is a whole lot of fun and a great activity to do to pass the time.
How to create a dazzling home light display
First off you probably don’t want to create such a mess of lights that it confuses aircrafts and annoys the whole neigborhood. Being classy and well thought out with your lights will create something you can be proud of and people walking by will actually enjoy.
A also advise yoy use LED fairy lights and low energy outdoor bulbs to try and conserve some electricity. Also putting the display up later rather than sooner and taking the display down as soon as new year is over is at least a little more respectful to the environment as these displays can burn a lot of energy.
The first step is to plan. Just grabbing loads of lights and hap hazardsly sprawling them over everything is a big waste of time. So walk round your area and see what lights others have up. Get the kids to brainstorm and have a think about what elements of your home would look cool lit up. Planning will also help you know how many lights you need before hand.
Make sure you are ready to put everything up safely and don’t have some things plugged in and some not, we don’t want any electric problems or shock here especially if the kids are around. Also falling off a ladder is a terrible way to start the holidays so make sure you have someone to hold things steady and you take precautions if going up high.
Personally I think a nice effect is outlining the house, outline the corners, along the guttering and around the doors and windows (and roof if you can safely get up there) and at night it will look like a drawing in lights of a house. You could even do this with your path and front fence.
Trees are excellent if you carefully twirl rows of lights around them going up to the tip and this works well over your plants too. Make sure you are using outdoor holiday LED lights for this as we don’t want a fire risk!
Also consider spotlights lighting up any cool tress or anything you have in your garden. You could spot light a plastic santa scene but that may be a little tacky!
I also think it looks cool when people get a plastic reindeer or such a thing, pain it black and pop holes in the body, then place a light inside. So you get some pin hole lights bursting out of the reindeer or other object helping to define the shapes in light at night.
