You’ll need a lot of time devoted to the following to start your own successful business in Canada…

Patience

Starting your own business is no easy task. Chances are you will struggle for quite a bit before you end up seeing any results.  If you’re looking for a get rich quick strategy, it might be best to pursue something else. There are the incredible success stories of people starting businesses from home and becoming millionaires but those are few and far between.

Research

I cannot stress this enough: do your homework before anything! Ask yourself: Is there a demand for your service/product? If so, how saturated is the market you’re about to enter? If it’s riddled with competition then maybe consider a new niche market. How profitable have future similar businesses been? With sufficient research you should be able to find your angle that will make you stand out.

Talking to the To Experts

There are plenty of great organizations to consult about starting your business before you get started. Plus, there may be grants or loans available that will help you out. Considering consulting The Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses or finding a mentor.

Following Protocol

- Register your business at the local municipality. Once you’ve done this you’ll receive a license to conduct business in that area.

- File your business for the Goods and Services tax (GSA). This is a federal tax that you only need to really register for if your business earnings have exceeded $30,000 CDN in the past 12-month period.

- Make sure that you register for your Provincial Sales Tax or (PST). You’re supposed to collect this tax from your customers and pass it on to your province’s Consumer Taxation Branch. Make sure you hold onto the number they give you as you might need it for other purposes.

- Check with your local province to see if there’s anything else you need for starting your business.

Ask Yourself The Hard Questions

How much do you need to make to be able to live comfortably?

Are you putting your family’s welfare in jeopardy?

Is this a endeavor you’ll regret not taking in the future?

Develop An Airtight Business Plan

This is the part of the game that nobody likes — the dreaded business plan. Keep in mind that you’ll have to have done hours upon hours of research before you start this. And after you’ve finished your first draft, it’s recommended that you have someone with business experience take a look at it. Try to get investors with your business plan. Nobody hopping on board? You might need to tweak the idea until people are excited to become a part of what you’re doing.

That $30k mark has us worried. If we exceed it we have to pay a NASTY 13% for HST. Our ad clients, I suspect, won’t pay that premium,
