Learning how to increase your earning potential is absolutely crucial to the success of your career. Many people make the mistake of assuming that once they enter their career field the only factor that affects their salary is time. Waiting to slowly make your way up the ladder is a huge mistake. Any successful person will tell you that their impressive position and salary were the direct result of constantly working at increasing their earning potential by aggressively creating opportunities for themselves.

The truth of the matter is that not only do you have to get your normal work done every day, but you have to simultaneously be working on your future. The next step– which should be a better job that you’ll enjoy and get paid more for.

Make sure you know everything about the industry that you’re working in and are looking into the future. People who understand what the next few steps are and have an innovative ideas that work in this direction are sure to get recognition and become a more valuable asset to their employer.

Always keep your eye open for opportunity.

Even if you’re gainfully employed, you should always be on the lookout for new, better opportunities. Whether it’s in-house or not, make it a habit to regularly check job opportunities. Many people, even if they’re unhappy with their job and salary, won’t bother looking for a new job until they’re absolutely fed up. Check regularly, always keep your eyes and ears out for opportunities and update your resume as needed.

Make yourself an expert.

Whatever it takes, be the person who nobody knows more than in your position. Take classes outside of work, get books, reach out to well-established people in your field to network with and pick their brains. Your hard work and knowledge will stand out and ultimately make you into the better candidate who deserves more $$.

Stand out.

Whatever it takes, make yourself stand out from the crowd. Your resume should be interesting, impressive and superior to your competitors. Always be improving your credentials! This could include:

- Going back to school and getting another degree or getting a certificate in a specialized field.

- Taking on prestigious or challenging projects and successfully balancing them with your normal workload.

- Taking on leadership roles in office projects.

- Learning a language.

- Learning new computer software.

- Acquiring difficult skills that your colleagues in the same position are reluctant to pursue.
