It’s Labor Day Weekend, Run For The Hills
Posted on 02. Sep, 2010 by Forest in General
Wow the year really is flying by! September already and that means that it’s Labor Day on Monday, 4 days of bliss away from the struggles of pleasing that pain in the ass boss.
Labor day is great for a million reasons, any long weekend is great and it gives families a chance to spend some good quality time with each other, it’s time enough to take a short trip somewhere or finish a project you have been eager to get on with. Sadly this beautiful long weekend is often taken up with something else, something evil!
…Shopping!
Seriously people, why battle the queues and bright head ache inducing lights of the box stores to pick up some crap you don’t need. You don’t need a half priced bread maker or a matching pair of his and her BBQ aprons.
I suggest this labor day you just simply don’t do any shopping (ok, under some circumstances running to the supermarket or hardware store wouldn’t be frowned upon by me!). Leave that to everyone else. If you really need to get something then maybe check out some online deals but don’t go to the store unless it’s something you have to get (I can only think of food and beer as the things you may need).
Ok so no shopping, what are we going to do with all that time?
Just taking out one simple shopping trip will free hours in your schedule. Here are some suggestions.
- Take a scenic route out of town and go and see a friend or relative that you have not seen for a long while.
- Take your family out for a BBQ and a picnic.
- Spend the weekend preparing a mega feast for friends and family.
- Sleep, catch up and sleep in every day over the weekend!
- Make a list of all those little DIY jobs and do them in one long day, rest the next day.
- Walk your neighborhood, try and see every nook and cranny. I don’t think we spend long enough getting to know where we live!
- Literally run for the hills and get out into the country for some camping.
- Read a book and do nothing!
These are just some ideas but you get the point. Don’t follow the crowd and head for the boring stores, do something nice this weekend.
I would love to know what you are up to this weekend.

Perhaps you should specify mall shopping in your “I suggest this labor day you just simply don’t do any shopping” statement. Since two of your non-shopping alternative ideas involve grocery shopping (for those of us who do not have a pantry stocked with enough ingredients to make a mega feast).

Hey Leslie, I added in a little disclaimer but I think everyone understands the sentiment I was gunning for! Thanks for stopping by.

Mega-feast sounds good, or maybe just the sleeping in part, too

This piece expresses what I’ve been thinking for quite some time. When and why did “shopping” become America’s favorite pastime, hobby, entertainment and time-killer?
This weekend it would be nice to think Americans would get out of their cars and malls and spend some time relaxing and rejuvenating in the great outdoors.

Hey Savvy Saving Bytes, exactly, we have been programmed to run at the sales but honestly most of us don’t need to buy anything and it just causes stress for everyone!

Very good suggestions. One thing I always like to do is tackle a big project that I had been putting off. Like a housecleaning day, clean the garage, or move all the furniture around. I know it doesn’t sound fun but at the end of that day the sense of accomplishment more than outweighed the it’s not fun feeling. When I had kids they were involved in the project also. Then two more days to have that barbeque and enjoy the spotless house.

Thanks Carol, I think that’s an admirable way to spend the long weekend. When things are in order everyone can relax.

We are visiting Niagara Falls! First time, so we’re excited. Of course, the forecast calls for rain both days we will be there… But we don’t even care! That’s what rain jackets and coffee are for!

My husband and I used a restaurant.com certificate last night and had a really nice dinner before heading out to an outdoor theatre where we enjoyed “Hello Dolly”. We used groupons for the theatre and had great seats for $40 instead of $90.
We still have two days to go!
