Jobs for Senior Citizens
Jobs for Senior Citizens – I realize that I’ve just written a post about jobs for people over 60, but it was really aimed at people who aren’t ready to retire and not senior citizens. I suppose some people don’t really make the distinction, but I feel compelled to. I think that for many people in their 60′s there is a turning point from working citizen to senior citizen. The way I see it, a senior citizen is a person who is over the retirement age, or around 65-67 in America. For many people at this particular age, retiring from a 40-year career is appealing, but that doesn’t mean they want to stop working altogether.

I’ve written before that retiring from working altogether too early can actually be bad for your health. Studies have shown that people who retire at 55 are more likely to die 10 years after retirement than people who retire at 65. Why? Because it turns out we need to stay active to stay alive. Stimulation and light doses of stress are good for us.
Hopefully these stresses don’t include worrying about money. Jobs for Senior Citizens should really be more about how to occupy your part of your time and stay active, rather than having an income.
The following are jobs that I would like to have when I’m a senior citizen:
Volunteer - I always feel guilty that I don’t spend enough time volunteering, but it’s difficult when you’re working full time. That’s why I hope that after I retire I’ll be able to give back to the community as much as possible.
Mentor - With years of experience in your field, there’s a lot of opportunity for you to help someone who is up and coming. Or just become a life mentor– advice is priceless. I like the idea of sharing my life knowledge with a fledgling.
Librarian - Okay, again this is my dream senior citizen job– to work in a library. The idea of spending time surrounded by books and making suggestions sounds heavenly.
Museum Tour Guide – Museums have volunteer tour guides all the time and its a great opportunity to learn more, or just have people at your mercy to listen to you as you geek out about something you’re passionate about. For me (again this is a dream job), this would be either being a museum tour guide at the natural history museum and teaching people about dinosaurs or being a tour guide at an aquarium and talking about fish all day long.
At the end of the day, however, it’s just important to stay active and a job can help many senior citizens do just this.

There are plenty of volunteer jobs for people who work full time. At one food bank, people come in their dress clothes after work, change to jeans and help work a the food bank.
You can volunteer as a person or with a group who helps fix things around homes for seniors. These can be minimal skill tasks or complicated. I cannot climb on a ladder safely, so I could find a job or two that would take an hour after work or two hours on Saturday for one person. My jobs are not complicated, just too far up for me with my knee and back surgeries looming.
If you look hard enough, you can find volunteer work that is right up your alley.
While I was working and going to school full-time, I spotted a woman I recognized walking in the gutter, battling the wind and rain on a chilly day. She had an envelope in her hand and was walking to the PO. I stopped and gave her a ride to PO and back to her home. That is a spur of the moment volunteer/assistance that was not organzed.
Literacy volunteers are often still in the work force.
Find one person who needs their trash taken to the road, sidewalk swept, groceries carried in and make that your volunteer duty.
You might have to give up 10 minutes of two or three days, but I guarantee you their are things that need a volunteer. You won’t get credit or points, but you will feel good about what you do.
When I was in my forties, I helped my 90+ neighbor. I replaced light bulbs, dragged her garbage to the road, and generally made myself useful on a haphazard basis other times. If I were ever down, helping her made my mood lighter.

THERE are things….I know better! Lying down and typing is not conducive to correct writing some days.
