Man Refuses to Pay $1 Maintenance to Ex-Wife

Divorce can definitely make people bitter– but a man not willing to pay the $1 maintenance sum to his ex-wife mandated by the judge in their divorce case? Talk about bad blood. I wrote this story originally for The Random Forest.

A Singaporean man refuses to pay his ex-wife the $1 maintenance ‘token sum’ awarded by the judge in their divorce. According to the the Shin Min Daily, the wife earns more than $10,000 a month while the husband has a monthly income of the $5,000. On top of that the wife’s total assets are estimated to be around $62 million and the husband’s $25 million.

The husband, however, has a monthly debt of $1,850 that in reality puts less than $100 in his bank account. So why did the judge feel as though he owed the wife some sort of compensation? Apparently he was moved by her story– the divorcee claimed that she had made significant financial contributions to the family over the course of their 17-year marriage. Meanwhile the husband was racking up debt, ultimately causing them all a great deal of hardship.

Not only does the wife claim she payed the majority of their daily expenses, but she says she also helped her husband pay a large part of his debt.

Paying his ex-wife the $1 is, of course, a symbolic gesture. The judge felt as though the woman had shouldered most of the expenses and stress the husband accumulated throughout their marriage and that he was more indebted to her. There must be some bad blood, however, as the man is refusing to pony up. Maybe he’s frustrated that his ex always ends up ahead. Or maybe he is worried that he has less than $100 in the bank and can’t afford the $1. I have a feeling it just a matter of pride– I rarely hear about amicable divorces. I know that even if both my parents were multi-millionaires, after their divorce they would have rather faced a pack of wild dogs than give the other a dollar.

Hopefully something gets worked out between those two. Considering she’s a millionaire, will they qualify for a spot in one of the mostexpensive divorces in history? Or maybe they’ll just create the record for smallest sum ordered to pay an ex-spouse. Either way it sounds like the ex-husband got the short end of the stick– an estimated $25 million in assets and still less than $100 in the bank? I’d be bitter too.
