Most Expensive Celebrity Divorces

most expensive divorces forbesMost Expensive Celebrity Divorces -  It really is quite astounding how much celebrities end up paying each other to part ways. These days it is almost necessary to start with a pre-nuptial agreement but it’s just such a bureaucratic and horrible thing to have to do when tying the knot and being in that early stage of your hopefully life long relationship. When you marry it’s generally normal to think you will be with this person forever and that is obviously no different for celebrities and very rich people!

Most expensive celebrity divorces from Forbes, the top 5

Forbes posted an article with their 10 most expensive celebrity divorces and wow are they expensive! Let’s take a look at the top 5.

5. Kevin Costner & Cindy Silva
Costner and Silva met at uni and were married for 16 years. As Cindy was with Costner through his most famous years she was awarded $80million during the divorce…. And that’s number 5!

4. Harrison Ford & Melissa Mathison
I have heard about this divorce many times.  Mathison was richer and more famous than Ford when they met back in the early 80′s. I believe she penned the script to ET but Harrison obviously became the super star a few years later. Her settlement was estimated at $85million plus a slice of future earnings on movie that Harrison produced whilst they were married.

3. Steven Spielberg & Amy Irving
After only 4 years of marriage this couple split and Any contested a pre-nup that was supposedly written on a napkin. She was awarded approx $100million.

2. Neil Diamond & Marcia Murphey
This couple met before Neil hit Gold with his records and although they enjoyed a long marriage it came to an end in 1994. Diamond was told to pay half his fortune which was around $150million.

1. Michael & Juanita Jordan
This divorce settlement is pending but it’s estimated that it could be $150million + as Jordan’s fortune is $350million. They have been married since 1989 so it was a fairly long marriage.

Obviously these celebs were really the big time and in millions of millions of dollars of settlements and all sorts but it really gets you thinking in general that marriage needs to be really organised and thought out which of course is against the whirlwind sweeps that people want. Sadly money gets in the way again!

It’s also interesting in these top 5′s that women are always the winners of the settlements. Of course that is changing as women are becoming primary earners but in our current society women are the ones that often forfeit their careers and lose earnings over the years to be in a marriage.

None of us are planning to be poor when we are older and the sad fact of life is that we may drift away from our loved ones and divorce may be an issue that has to be dealt with. I doubt any of us will ever make the top 10 expensive divorece list, or even the top 1000 but it can still drain every penny we have if we don’t set out legal rules from the outset….. What a sour thought!

What do you think about these expensive divorces and divorce costs in general?

These aren’t marriages, they’re business transactions. And Red, they aren’t married. Too much money to deal with I guess. :)
