Now Insanity – Continuing The Workout At Home Trend
Posted by Forest in General Articles, Health, Saving Money & Finances
For those of you that have been following for a while you will know that I recently finished p90x, the 3 month home workout routine. It thought it was awesome and it really did catapult my home fitness and it more than fitted my budget. I lost a bunch of weight, gained a lot of strength and in general ending up feeling very good about myself. However I still have around 10lbs to lose and would like to get my Cardio strength up a little more.
After a few weeks off of intense exercise I am now ready to start my next batch of home workout…. This time I am starting another Infomercial fave from Beach Body called Insanity.
Insanity is a 60 day home workout, led by Hip Hop Abs Shaun T, with high cardiovascular and plyometrics training using some made up thing called max interval training. Basically you work really hard and get quick 30 second breaks in the 40-60min workouts. You are expected to workout 6 days a week.
Today I did my Fit Test, read the guides and watched some of the other workouts…. My initial impression, yeah it’s a little American and Cheesy but it’s actually pretty damn good and looks darn hard! I am looking forward to the results! It involves a lot of running (on the spot) jumping, squatting, reaching and pushing and pulling, all with no extra equipment (how frugal is that!). My fitness test results were not amazing but I think I did ok.
The diet guide was also a good read. They give you a pretty attainable healthy eating plan for a 5 meal a day cycle and it comes with a large range of suggestions and alternatives if needed. It’s unlikely I will stick to this fully but i’ll definitely be looking to it for advice.
Working out at home really is a lot cheaper and in many ways more satisfying. When no one is watching you can make silly faces, try silly moves and really push yourself without the chance of embarrassment. Also you save a bunch of cash on travel to the gym and the membership itself. If you want further convincing to stay away from the shiny lights of the gym read Fiscal Geek’s article Why The Gym Is A Waste Of Money. (I also read an amusing post today where Financial samurai left his car at the gym and accidently took the bus home, oops!!)
If you want to jump on the fitness band wagon with me then you can grab the Insanity workout at a reasonable price from Amazon <Click On The Affiliate Image Below To Go To Amazon–>.
If you don’t have enough time for 1hour a day 6 days a week then you may want to look into other options that will still get you into excellent shape such as The Two Year Fitness Program, a post by Early Retirement Extreme.
Let me know what you are doing or planning on doing for home fitness.

I had these high, lofty goals of using the Wii Fit on a regular basis that we got for Christmas. I think I’ve used her twice.
I’m not very good at motivating myself to work out! That definitely needs to change someday…

The good thing about the programs I have been following is that they have an end goal…. If there is a way to make Wii Fit set a program with an end goal up then try that… If you don’t make the goal you feel more obliged to stick to it! I used wii fit a few times and quite enjoyed it, it’s a fun way to work out.
Thanks for your comment.

The program I described in the 2 year program is actually quite the killer. It’s a 2 year program because it will take an untrained person 2 years to get to that level. Someone competing at the college varsity level might do it in 3-6 months.

Hey Early Retirement Extreme,
Sorry I meant it was less demanding on schedule… Didn’t mean to liken it to some easy BS Richard Simmons crap
. I edited the post slightly so it doesn’t read as being easy

My husband and I do (or did) P90X as well. It is a great workout and you can get it done in the same amount of time it would take you to get to the gym and back. And your right, working out at home you don’t have to worry about how silly you look…especially doing some of the crazy yoga moves. I’ve gained 35 lbs with my pregnancy and can’t wait to get back to our workouts.

That’s awesome…. The baby bearing can do that to someone I guess!! I often hear us guys put on a few pounds during that period too!!
Good luck getting back into it. You may want to try Insanity as it’s much more geared to cardiovascular, which all in all means weight loss…. I know I am fit, I just need to get rid of the excess fat and I think Insanity will go some way towards doing that…. Today’s workout was HARD!!!

I love Insanity. I’ve done P90X and I think I like Insanity better except that it’s definitely a different type of workout so it really depends on your goals. Insanity is more plyometrics and will make you sweat like never before. P90X is a little more traditional weight exercises to tone you up.
I do have to say that I don’t recommend getting either off of Amazon. There are a few different programs of each Insanity and P90X and they have different price levels depending on what you want. Here’s an example for Insanity http://diyworkouts.com/programs/insanity/

Hey DIY Workouts, thanks for the comment and it’s a nice review site you have over there, I hope it’s doing well for you, they are great products to promote and really are doing people (who commit) a good service.
I think you said it exactly right about the differences there. p90x didn’t make me huge but it definitely got some muscles working. I’ll likely finish up Insanity to loose a little more flab and then go back to p90x to bulk up a little more…. Little by Little!
As for buying off Amazon, p90x is actually seems to be much cheaper on Amazon and I really think the basic package is best for a beginner. Insanity seems to be the same price so I guess it doesn’t hurt to buy from Beachbody direct.

Great article highlighting the huge benefits of P90x and Insanity. Both amazing programs. yes, anyone can do this and anyone can make the time. Just wake up earlier, that’s what I do. It works! Then you’ll miss it if you don’t do the workout.

Agreed, I woke up early for the whole of p90x and am starting the same with Insanity (just completed day 3)….

Just started week 6 of Insanity and I must say Max Interval Circuit is pretty tough. Great workout. I’ve also have done P90X and which one an individual likes best will depend on what their goals are.

That’s awesome… Not done Max Interval yet…. sounds hard!!
I agree, p90x seems to be for bulking, Insanity for trimming down a little, I could do with a trim down before I get back to any serious bulking.
Thanks for stopping by.

Nice man. I would expect nothing less than a 2-pack from a P90X graduate!
You will start to nice that bloggers are quite a heavier than usual bunch. Hence why I wrote my post today, so I can avoid falling into the trend!

Ha ha, I should have but prior to moving to Egypt I had a 4month, 3 country run of drinking and eating…. That set things back a little. I was still running that whole time and even improving some times…. But the belly was growing… It’s definitely only little again now

I’m glad to hear the program is working for you and you’ve noticed some solid improvements.
Working out with a program like that at home is something that interests me, its just that i’m one of those cats (ahem…I mean ‘rats’) that just has to leave the house to get my workout done or I’ll just be cramped up at home all day! I think its part of the ‘mental preparation’ that I need to get on the go.
Nice post.

Ha ha, I used to be the same as you about leaving the house until I was kind of forced to work out at home…. now I love it…. I do often leave the house for work though. Cafe’s are often my office these days.

Hi everyone,
I have to agree with your article. As a Beachbody coach I also prefer to workout at home for the reason you stated. I feel free to do and try a lot more things at home than I would at the gym, fearing I would look silly trying half of the moves or trying something I really can’t do well like chin-ups!
These programs are tough, but if you stick with them faithfully you can get great results.
Well keep pushing play everyone!

… I am thinking of becoming a beachbody coach later in the year… For now I just want to finish Insanity and then maybe create a hybrid between p90x and Insanity…. I am much better at pull ups now but still not amazing!
