Nurse Donates Kidney to Patient – Donating parts of your body to others in need is a charity that is beyond the call of duty, especially when it is a nurse who has decided to donate her kidney to a patient!

If you can read about this and not feel anything then you have a heart of stone! I’ll go briefly into the details.

Allison Batson, a transplant nurse, at Atlanta’s Emory University Hospital first met Clay Taber, then 22, when he was omitted with kidney failure in August 2010.  Taber was admitted to Batson’s floor, normally for people who had received donations already, due to lack of beds. Seeing a young man like this stuck a chord.

Taber had been struck with Goodpasture syndrome, something that can attack the lungs and kidneys in a matter of days and can be got from a viral respiratory infection or by inhaling hydrocarbon solvents. Taber thinks his swimming in the Golf of Mexico a few weeks prior could be related to it.

With Taber spending another month in hospital Batson bonded with his mother and felt a connection because one of her own children suffers from an autoimmune disease. So she eventually decided to offer up one of her own kidneys.

After te disease was confirmed in remission and Taber’s immediate family were ruled out Batson was tested and she was a match. The pair are now recovering well in hospital. Batson will return to work in 6-weeks and Taber will be marrying in June where he will now have someone he considers a third inlaw.

More details can be read in the story from Today.

Nurse Donates Kidney to Patient…

This story struck a chord with me too. There are roughly 6000 live donations a year in the USA, not very many considering how many people need organs that us, the living, can sacrifice. Kidney donation is not without complications and can lead to small things like decreased energy or worse problems. Of course most of the time it’s ok but still, allowing someone to take a piece of your body, when you have only known them a year, is something extremely special.

This nurse is someone to look up to. I don’t think at this stage I could do it for a near stranger and I consider myself a giving person. My selfishness has me worrying about the complications I would face! Of course for somebody close I would do it in a heartbeat.

What do you think of this story? Would you consider the same thing in the same situation?
