Predictions About the Future that Came True – The only way we ever create something is by coming up with the idea in the first place so it is no surprise that many predictions eventually become reality. However some things are predicted with amazing accuracy years before a hint of their existence.

Star Trek was a particularly forward thinking show and had a lot of sci-fi objects and items that are now real objects. The small communicators are incredibly close to flip phones as one example. A lot of people are holding out for the transporters and Science is working hard on bringing something similar to life!

One particular man who gets a lot of respect is Arthur C Clarke. He is credited with coming up with the idea of Satellites and how they would work revolving with the earth. In the video below from 1974 he tells a kid that every family will have a computer at home in 2001 and predicts something extremely like the internet! Awesome stuff!

A really interesting article from the BBC looked at the predictions made by American civil engineer called John Elfreth Watkins in 1900. He got some things very right and some a little wrong but he predicted things like the growing height of americans, mobile phones, colour photography and a hint at it being digital, Television and fast 150mph trains. Leonardo Da Vinci didn’t predict as such but he was working on designs for things that were later invented by different people. This included things like the plane, helicopters, bridges and war machines (like the tank image above).

Of course many predictions are made and most don’t quite turn out how people thought. With all the thoughts and ideas bouncing around some things are bound to be right. Then there is the power of hindsight, the way you can re-look at a prediction and say “oh they meant that”. People often do this with the writings of people like Nostradamus.

I hope that the ideas of the internet helping people learn and take control of their own destiny becomes a reality at the level some predict and have great hopes for green energy production and safe, speedy world transport.
