Thanks to Lauren from the Best Colleges Online Blog for this great guest post.
Public libraries are not as popular as they once were. Since the invention of the internet, many kids these days haven’t even set foot into a library. But as students are heading back to school and families remain in a budget pinch, free and cheap services offered by local libraries are helping these institutions come back in vogue.
Most libraries these days provide great technology centers for students facing a family computer shortage. Armed with a library card, and sometimes a student identification card, patrons can essentially check out a laptop from the libraries fleet of computers to use for homework, studying, research and other school related projects. If laptops aren’t readily available, most libraries also have computer rooms that are also free to use for patrons that include desktop computers, fax and copy machines, scanners, projectors, televisions and more. Also, many libraries even offer free downloads for patrons, including popular electronic books and movies, which essentially provides a great, free source of entertainment. If after checking out a library laptop, students can access a free internet network, they have basically just acquired a personal computer at no additional cost. This access can be especially beneficial to students of families that can’t afford to purchase additional computers during this tight recession.
Aside from the technology benefits, a great number of libraries also provide tutoring services for local residents. While most of these services come with a fee, the cost is minimal compared to professional tutoring services that can charge astronomical rates. These tutors are screened and checked before hiring and for $25 to $100 per hour, they can assist students with difficult homework and research papers in a variety of different subjects. Some libraries even have free homework assistance programs for students in elementary and high school grades in subjects like math, science, and reading. This free service could save families a bundle in time, money and stress.
Mentoring, after school, and family programs are also great free services provided by local libraries. Students and families can get involved with chess or reading clubs, hobby and crafting activities, and even exercise programs. The ability to keep students occupied, spend quality time as a family, and save money at the same time is a dream come true for most parents these days.
While all of these additional services are helping libraries become more popular once again, we shouldn’t forget the main benefits of becoming a library patron. Books, periodicals, encyclopedias and other printed material can help students become better readers, increase their interest in learning, and assist them in completing complex school related research.
Overall, libraries are providing families and students with a great deal of free and cheap services for educational and entertainment purposes, which can help them save money during this tight economy.

It is a good effort to help the students, who can’t afford private tuition. Since, the time has changed, the way of teaching too. Nowadays students are more internet-savvy and so inclined to online tutoring services. They like online tutors as they provide 1-to-1 tutoring to the students. Online tutoring is pocket-friendly too! My daughter is in 8th grade and uses one tutoring site named tutorteddy.com and to be frank, she has improved a lot after she has started taking online math tutoring from this site
