Sample Letter Leave of Absence
Sample Letter Leave of Absence
Life can provide all sorts of reasons for a leave of absence from work.Whether it’s medical, family oriented or just personal– an extended period of absence requires a formal letter of request. It’s can feel like a difficult question to pose to your employer, you are making a personal request that affects your professional life, after all.
Leave of absence can also be tricky because it straddles the strange inter-grounds of being employed/unemployed. You’re asking if you take significant time off from your job and still keep it along with your benefits. It’s important to remember that a leave of absence does not fall under the benefits category, but rather the exceptional circumstances category.
A Sample Letter Leave of Absence
When is requesting a leave of absence appropriate?
- If you are suffering an injury that requires more time away from work than your allotted days off provide.
- If the market or workplace is ‘sluggish’ and it would benefit the company as well as yourself to take some time away.
- If your family is enduring a personal issue that requires all of your attention: illness, death, birth, etc.
Before you make your request:
** Check to see if your employer has a written leave of absence policy outlining the terms and conditions of you leaving for an extended period of time.
** Consider your finances. Can you actually afford to take time off from work that won’t be covered by your vacation/sick days?
Now, let’s take a look at a sample letter. Leave of absence letters should be succinct and professional. The following letter is an example for someone who’s already broached the issue with their boss. It’s always good to talk about your request in person first before sending the letter. Ask your boss if they have a few moments to discuss a potential leave of absence before submitting a leave of absence.

I would like to look into my own agency’s leave of absence policy. I believe we have one, and wonder if it has to be for medical and other issues you listed above.
