Statue of Liberty Closes for Repairs
I guess this post is kind of more public announcement than normal but it was something that made me sigh a little, still I see the need for it!
I’m going to USA later this year hopefully for Thanksgiving and Christmas during which time I plan to visit the Big Apple again, because frankly it’s an awesome city!
Last time I was there I didn’t do any ultra touristy things so was hoping this time I would at least take a trip up the Statue of Liberty, sadly I have just found out it will be closed!
On October 28th the Statue of Liberty will be closing for around a year for repairs, modernisation adn renovation to make it more comfortable and safe for visitors inside the giant green lady. The closure is coming 125 years after her original dedication on October 28th 1886, wow she looks young for her age!
The colossal statue was a gift from the French and the lady represents the Roman god of freedom and liberty. One hand bears a giant torch and the other a tablet symbolising law. The tablet bears the American date of independence. At her feet sits some broken chains.
The island will remain open as normal with normal ferry services but sadly the statue will remain mostly obscurred throughout the repairs.
I may take a trip over to the island anyway but I am sad I won’t be able to take a walk up the steps and see from those windows below her crown. The good news is at least it will give me a valid excuse to come back when the work is finished. The repairs are well worthwhile to keep the lady an iconic part of the New York skyline and keep a piece of history in working order. Hopefully she will never fall into disrepair even though the renovations are often costly with the latest round costing $125.25 million! Still I bet she drags more in tourist money than what she costs.
Have you been to the island and up the statue before? Is it something you would recommend or is it an overblown thing? What is your favorite thing to do in New York and what frugal ideas do you have for having a great time in the city.
Emily, our other writer, lives in New York and I am hoping that soon she will find some time to jot down and post some of her favorite ways to live frugal in such an expensive city.

The statue looks so good because she had a “facelift” on her structure in 1986 after 100 yrs., for about $76 million. $125+ million shows inflation and is an awful lot in our present economy.
