Top Reasons to Quit Your Job

Posted on by in Uncategorized

A bad work situation can have toxic effects on you, your health and the people you love. If your job makes you unhappy, it’s crucial to take the time to really reflect on why you’re feeling this way and consider the other options available.

It’s easy to feel stuck in your job, especially when you’re worried about money. Money, although important, should come second to your health and happiness. Life is short and there’s no reason to spend it at a job that is negatively affecting you. If you’re experiencing any of the following circumstances, it may be time to consider quitting your job.

Top Reasons to Quit Your Job

You genuinely hate your job— Many people claim to ‘hate’ their job. After all, most jobs involve long hours of hard work that take us away from our family and friends. But there’s a huge difference between saying you ‘hate’ your job while venting to a friend after a long day and actually hating your job. The distinction should be recognized. If you are consumed by your hatred for your work, then it’s time to quit. This means all you can do is think about how much you hate your job—when you wake up in the morning, throughout your day, before you fall asleep. Life is too short to waste precious time in a place you hate.

You don’t agree with the ethics of your company – Values are important and there’s no reason you should ever have to compromise them for the sake of money. The act of merely standing up for what you believe in can influence other people and make a difference. If your company tests on animals or exploits others or pollutes the environment—these are important issues that if you disagree with, should never have to turn a blind eye from.  If you have to compromise your morals then it may be time to quit. Scary at first, but your conscience will thank you later.

There’s no potential for upward mobility – Always look to the future. If you feel as though you’re stuck in a dead end job then it’s important to start thinking about quitting. Put yourself on a career track with endless possibility, where your hard work and talent will allow you to move up to better salaries and more challenging positions.

You don’t get along with the people you work with— There’s no reason for you to have to work in a negative environment. If you find that going to work involves eight hours a day of being around people you don’t get along with, it may be time to consider leaving. Never underestimate the importance of environment on your health and happiness. Being surrounded by people with whom you have conflict can be stress inducing and counterproductive to your work and career. Begin looking for another job where you will like the people you work with and feel like you’re part of a team. You’ll be happier and your work will improve as a result.

You are constantly overwhelmed with stress –We experience many different types of stress as humans. Some types are healthy and stimulating, while others are detrimental to your health. Unhealthy levels of stress in your work can compromise your immune system. Are you getting sick all the time? Experiencing headaches? Also, bad stress can affect your relationships with friends and family. Have you become distant from the ones you love or irritable with them? If you’ve experienced any of these symptoms then it may be time to leave your job. Not only will this bad type of stress hurt you and the ones you love in the short term, but some researchers believe it can lead to serious health problems including high blood pressure, diabetes and perhaps even cancer.

Quitting can be a very scary experience, particularly when you’re worried about money. However, if your life has become overwhelmed with negativity from your work, it may be time to start applying for new jobs. With some effort and determination, you can find a better job that makes you happier and improves the overall quality of your life.

I think this is excellent advice, I hung on at Nortel for way too long and almost ruined my family life.

I agree with having no future career at the job your at, if their is no way to move up or be at the top I find no reason to be at that particular job.

Very good advice. Years ago I worked in a corporate environment, and though I didn’t hate my job, I knew that kind of work wasn’t for me. I last less than a total of 3 years at 3 different “corporate” jobs and finally moved on to teaching; a much more inspiring, creative, and flexible profession for me.

  4. Being someplace you hate can truly be toxic to your health. It sucks when your Sunday is ruined because you fear going to work on Monday. It is so important to get out of a place you don’t want to be!

I won’t suggest quitting, but loving your career is so much better! This my 7th and I never enjoyed it more making less than I ever did. Crazy, but true! I make less and enjoy my career more and life more. I can afford to do it, my kids are grown, I downsized and have enough money put away for retirement. Happiness is priceless!

I think if you don’t like your job and are afarid to qiut, because of having no money to live, pay your bills. Give your self 6 months to a year to find a better job. Save for rainy days. So you can finally tell your boss to take this job and shove it.

A bad working environment is the best reason for quitting your job. If the boss and staff are toxic then leave.

Good article Forest. My last job, while I loved the work I did, my bosses and co-worker made it an awful place to work. One of my bosses, the husband, routinely told me I smelled bad (I showered daily and did not use any sort of scents that might offend and wore clean clothes each day), I told I wasn’t good enough to be seen by customers, and customers were brought into the back where I worked, I was punished for interacting with them when they were always the ones to approach me. My co-worker was caught doing drugs and later fired for that, yet it was my personal life that was constantly being pried into and judged, again being told I was a bad person. They pressured me with their religious beliefs almost every morning. Eventually I had an emotional breakdown and they fired me over it. When I tried to collect unemployment, they took me to court, said I quit on my own, and I was forced to pay it back. I have been out of work since then and that was over 3 years ago.

Stress really is a killer, and reason enough to quit and do something more relaxing.

BTW, Emily are you a new staff writer for Forest?

  10. wow – the list sure sounds familiar :)

unfortunately, many just don’t have the option to quit – another reason why fundamental personal finance education is needed to folks can position themselves to call their own shots – such as walk away from the “man”

Sadly Sunil that is a big problem in uncertain times. With a lot of work though you can get out of it no matter what.
