Two Sent To Hospital After World’s Hottest Chilli Contest

A ‘world’s hottest’ chilli eating contest in Edinburgh got so intense that two of its participants were sent to the hospital.

Hosted by Kismot Restaurant on St. Leonard’s place, the curry eating contest caused most of the competitors enough physical discomfort to drop out fairly quickly– sweating, panting, etc. For others, however, the symptoms were much more severe.

Vomiting, writhing on the floor in pain and fainting was enough to call an ambulance for two of the participants after sampling the events special dish ‘The Kismot Killer’.

In the past the dish has induced nosebleeds and sent an elderly man to the hospital. Regardless, the owner of the restaurant, Abdul Ali, was surprised at how out of control the event got. The ‘world’s hottest’ chilli eating contest is an annual event he hosts to raise money for the charity CHAS.

The winner of this year’s competition was Beverly Jones from Newington. Second place winner Curie Kim was sent to the hospital twice after the competition and fifth place Mike Lavin was also picked up by an ambulance after eating several spoonfuls of the ‘killer’ curry.

A spokesperson from the ambulance service has made a statement that the annual competition should be reviewed in the way that it is handled in the future. Mr. Ali admitted that he will have to probably ‘tone down’ the food.

I’ve eaten some spicy food in my time but never to the point where I felt like I was going to: vomit, faint, die, etc. I don’t supposed most people have.

If you love spicy food (but aren’t looking for Kismot Killer levels) there’s a good chance you’re interested in what the hottest hot sauces are out there. You might also be interested in learning what it is that makes these spicy sauces cause your tongue to feel.. en fuego.

Hot sauce can not only make bland meals more interesting, but it is also good for you and your digestion. Some people even attribute hot sauces as a way to curb your appetite and lose weight.

Hot sauces are commonly made from chili peppers, vinegar, oil, water and sometimes beer. The element that makes these sauces spicy are known as capsaicinoids. The hottest sauces are actually made from capsaicin extract. If you’re curious about how spiciness is measured, a hot sauce’s heat is measured by the Scoville Scale, which considers how many units of capsaicins (or heat) are present in a pepper or sauce. To give you an idea, Tabasco ranks 2,500 heat units on the Scoville Scale.

So what are the Hottest Hot Sauces out there?

The Source - from Original Juan Specialty Food is 7.1 million heat units.

Mad Dog 44 Magnum - 4 million heat units

I think anyone who goes for Blair’s 16 Million Reserve is a bit crazy. To give you an idea of how hot that sauce is, police grade pepper spray is 5.3 million heat units.
