Types of Cockroaches- Welcome to Part 2 in our 7 part Cockroach Control on a budget series.
Of the many types of cockroaches that are on this planet only a few are likely to be lurking in your cupboards and munching on your toenails at night. Control and eradication of all the types of cockroach is pretty much the same but their breeding cycles can have an effect on how long you will be fighting these pests for. The three most likely candidates for home cockroach infestation are:
Types of Cockroaches
The German Cockroach
Probably the most widespread of all household cockroaches, this little blighter is the most likely one to invade your home. In fact I have recently had to fight them off myself).
They also breed the quickest but luckily having quickest breeding cycle so can be eradicated in a shorter time. The incubation period lasts around 30 days with about 30-40 eggs hatching each time…. You can see how quickly this could add up!
You can identify them by their brown tanish color and the two lighter stripes that they tend to have on the back of their heads. Growing to around 1.5cm they sprout wings but cannot fly.
Oriental Cockroach
This variety of your now favorite bug can grow up to around 4cm and loves to crawl through sewerage and other disgusting matter! Dark brown or black on color they love starchy food and seek sheltered cover so can be hard to find.
They have little wings but luckily like their German cousins cannot fly. Eggs have approximately a 60 day incubation period and hatch in groups of around 15. They are also a little more sluggish then other roaches which makes them easier to kill on sight!
American Cockroach
These roaches are more likely African but I suspect the name came from their likeness to the the true American man. They love a drink, preferring fermented liquid over anything they can often be found in bars! They are big, growing up to 4cm. They can also fly but don’t bother that often… probably due to being drunk! Also they have a great ability to stand harsh weather and have been found living underneath snow!
Their incubation period is around 45 days and around about 33 eggs hatch so infestation of these critters can be fast and their life cycle last up to a year and a half.
If you have any other type of cockroach then let me know and I will find you some information.
Now you know what you have, I am sure you want to get on to the business of killing them, which will be discussed in the next part of the series.
