Unique family Christmas traditions

What are your Unique family Christmas traditions. It’s Christmas already and I just wondering what interesting things you and your family do every year? Also will let you know about some of my unique holiday traditions
I’m just getting some writing done on the blog before I close up shop for 2 days and do some low key (but unique in some ways) Christmas celebrating here in Egypt. Sadly I am away from my family this year.
I won’t be doing much, just going for a walk today probably to an area known as old Cairo then tomorrow out for dinner and the possibility of a non-religious (meaning muslims, jews, christians and atheists will all be attending) holiday party late in the evening.
This year I won’t be carrying out any traditions but I have had a few over the years.
Unique family Christmas traditions or unique holiday traditions (for those who don’t celebrate Christmas)
In my family it was always tradition to make a chocolate log on Christmas eve for dinner the next day. All us kids would be involved in this and we would decorate it with icing and sweets.
At 12 midnight we would have to go to bed and we had to wait until 7 in the morning before opening our presents. I used to wake up at latest at 5 so 7 was a loooooooong wait for me but that was the rule.
We would also only be able to open our small presents in the morning, the large present would have to wait until after dinner and this would also be when my grandman came round and we would open hers too.
The next day known as Boxing Day would be a recreation of Christmas day at my other Granma’s house and we would treat it like it was still Christmas but would often bring new toys from Christmas day.
My father always had a tradition of going to the pub just for one hour at lunchtime on Christmas. As an adult I have not been around much but have done this with him when I have and greatly enjoyed it. There is always a good spirit in the pub on Christmas day.
Oh I almost forgot my favorite. Every year my Mum buys me a selection box. A selection box is just a selection normally from Cadbury of popular candy bars. I eat most of them in one day!
Others traditions….
I knew a few families that would allow one present to be opened from under the tree on Christmas Eve at midnight.
A friend of mine would always get an orange and a lump of coal in his stocking for traditions sake.
My father and younger brother typically go on holiday over Christmas now and go fully catered, lazy Christmas!
What unique family Christmas traditions or unique holiday traditions do you have?
I would love to hear about your unique family traditions for the holidays or any others that are interesting that you have heard of.
Happy holidays.

Christmas eve, we visit friends and celebrate with them, although we are not Christians. As a family, we would go to the movies on Christmas Day. My children are adults now and we still keep the tradition. After the movies, a special dinner together. This tradition is over 35 years old.

Hey Krantcents, I am not Christian either but have celebrated with Christian friends before. Just being with friends and loved ones is enough for me. The movie thing sounds fun and is actually something I did 2 years ago on Christmas day!

In order to curb capitalism and rampant consumerism, my wife has told our young sons that Santa will only bring three gifts to them each because baby Jesus only received three gifts. It helps us keep our eyes on the real reason for the season.

We do the elf-on-a-shelf here. It’s some little puppet and book you can get at major bookstores. the premise is that he’s santa’s helper and we move him around the house each night and the kids try to find him in the morning. the story is that he “spies” on the kids and tells santa if they’re good or bad, so we get at least 4 weeks of decent behavior in December LOL. they get all excited and laugh when he shows up in ridiculous places each morning. it’s worked out well for a few years now.

We stayed home for Christmas this year and it was a great relaxing holiday. The Mrs. is starting some traditions as follows. She makes a real cup of coco from real chocolate, yummmm…. so much better than instant coco. A simple coffee cake for breakfast then open presents. It’s nothing weird, but I’m sure she’ll come up with more things as the years goes by. She also has the Christmas tree inherited from her Grandma and had a lot of fun decorating that. Another whole year until Christmas.

Hey 40,
That is a nice tradition even if new. You should try cinnamon and a little chilli powder in that chocolate, it is really yummy!
It’s nice and a frugal to keep old trees and decorations too, much better than buying new crappy decorations.
