Vanessa Bryant $75 million – Now Frugal Zeitgeist isn’t exactly a gossip blog but I am always stunned by divorce settlements and there are reports going around today that Vanessa Bryant may be in-line for a $75 million settlement and I wanted to talk a little about that!

Kobe, the NBA’s highest paid player, and Vanessa met back in 1999 when they were 21 and 17. Their love blossomed quickly and an engagement came 6-months later. In 2001 they married and it has been said by Vanessa’s cousin and her mother that a prenuptial agreement was never made.

In 2003 Kobe was involved in a mess that started as allegations of sexual assault but ended with him admitting that he did have an adulterous sexual encounter but was under the impression that it was consensual. He finally had to apologise and things were settled out of court.

Now, 8-years on from that incident Vanessa has filed for divorce citing the standard “irreconcilable differences” and the pair released a joint statement saying they have resolved all their issues privately. In other words details as to why they are divorcing is being kept away from the press, for now!

So the speculation of how much the settlement could be has started. The LA Times have estimated that it could be around $75 million along with ongoing spouse and child support.

In California a marriage over 10 years counts as lengthly and the pair never signed that prenup so Vanessa is entitled to a huge whack, possible half, of Kobe’s estimated $150 million fortune.

Although in many ways this doesn’t seem fair I guess when you think about it, it does make sense. Vanessa has lost 10 years of her life where she could have been pursuing her own career as a dancer and has had to ride the waves of the press and everything surrounding Kobe. Of course I am sure it has been one hell of a ride in the positive sense too.

However these celebrity divorces are not a way to judge divorce in general. Sadly, it is often the case, divorce rarely benefits anyone with families being ripped apart, kids getting used as weapons and money becoming the bitter and horrible things that push people to lie and bend truths. I’m not saying it should not happen, or saying that people shouldn’t get equal splits but it’s just an ugly thing.

Maybe couples should spend more time together before getting married. I don’t see an issue in living together for at least 5 years before going official with it all.
