Watch TV on computer
Posted on by Forest in General, Opinion, Saving Money & Finances
TV looks great on an LCD screen, luckily most computers these days have an LCD screen so looking to watch TV on your computer is a logical idea!
Luckily there are many many options to get Television shows and movies to watch on your computer and these days more and more live streaming options are even available. You may find enough options to cancel cable!
First let’s take a look at watching TV shows and movies on your computer.
YouTube, Hulu.com, Google Video and Other Video Sites
It would be silly of me not to mention YouTube first. 100′s of shows can be found uploaded (often illegally) by users split across parts. I have watched many shows like this. Google Video often offers shows, documentaries and more but Hulu is the real class act her. Hulu offers many legal full length shows, clips, documentaries, music videos and more, often in Hi-Def so they look beautiful full screen…. Hulu is one of the first places I would go to get television on my computer.
TV Networks Own Site
Many networks offer replay of their shows for free online. Fox, NBC and all the big players do this so you can catch up on Lost, Desperate Housewives and more!
Pay sites: Itunes, Azeurus
Through Itunes and Azeurus you can get full hi-def shows and movies to buy or rent. I believe Itunes charges around $3 for rental of a show episode and $5 for renting a movie, not too bad for an evening in!
Now what options for live streaming do you have to watch TV on your computer.
Live Streaming Sites
You have to be careful with this and it’s not likely you will find any mainstream channels… However there are lots of foreign channels online and some smaller stations streaming live through sites like WWITV.com. It can be quite fun to hop around.
You may also find that some of the bigger networks will occasionally lie stream things like sporting events or important news stories so keep an eye out for these schedules.
USB Digital TV Tuner
For a little over $50 Amazon has a range of USB sticks and software that will allow you to receive analog and hi-def digital cable TV on your Desktop PC or Laptop. This is probably he best way to watch TV on your computer! The offering above on Amazon gets a 4/5 star rating. Here is my affiliate link to the product on Amazon: Avertv Hybrid Volar Max Tv Tuner Kit for Windows MTVHVMXSK
Have you watched TV on your computer? If so I would love to hear you opinion and know how you do it. Thanks very much for reading.
I will be on vacation until April 10th, all comments will be answered on my return, unless I find time to pop into an Internet cafe

I have watched TV on my computer on all the sites you mention above. The challenge is that it is not as convenient as being on a television. I like the fact that you can watch on demand shows and I hope you can then pay for the premium content you want, rather than buying a cable package that includes 100 channels, 3 you really want to watch and 2 channels that are not included in the package you have purchased. Those 2 channels you really want are in the next package which costs $15-20 more per month. Why not just let us choose the channels we want to watch, a la carte? Maybe we will get there someday.
Great article. Thanks for sharing!

I agree, you have to forfeit a little comfort, unless you have the option to hook up your computer to your TV and that helps somewhat….
They should give custom per channel pricing but so many channels would probably go out of business as no one would ever pick them up.

I was hooking my laptop up to the tv for a while watching *legal* stuff until I figured out how to do it on my PS3 – the quality was much better

I know you are writing about TV and not movies but most subscribers to Netflix can watch an unlimited number of movies on their computer. It is a little hassle, but for “Movie Night” we have hooked the laptop to a video projector and (with powered speakers) watched the Netflix movies on a “big screen”.

I love Netflix, my xbox360 acts as a netflix box (in USA) and allows streaming and renting through it…. Awesome service.

Movies Links is an awesome site… I didn’t want to delve too much into the sites that link to illegal uploads but there are a ton with a lot of movies and shows available.

Thanks for the great list of sites. I just paid our outrageously high satellite bill, so I’m really thinking about cutting back on entertainment costs and looking for some more frugal television options. I’m bookmarking your list for later reference. Thanks again.

I do this all the time! Especially when I feel the need for re-runs of my old favourite cartoons. Animanics and Reboot comes to mind.
But I take heed not to succumb to the idiot box too much. But if pressed to watch, chances are I’d tune into CNBC to watch market trends.

Yeah I hardly turn the ‘idiot box’ on much either! I tend to get my news from the web these days.
