Where are local farmers markets?

Where are local farmers marketsFarmers markets are quite simply awesome. Local farmers and hobby growers and people who make a variety of amazing goods all turn up in a field / car park or public space and sell their wares. Simple but brilliant and the way I would ideally do all my groceries.

It’s very likely that you have at least one regular farmers market in your area and in most cases there will be multiple options. Markets vary greatly from very low key straight up vegetable markets to extravagant gourmet affairs with over priced (but often extremely high quality) goods. Farmers markets are often the best place to get amazing organic fruit and vegetables and it’s likely they will always be fresh and in season. Whatever type of market it is you will almost always find something healthy, fresh and yummy. You will also find that at some markets you will pay less than store prices for great organic goods but others may be a little on the higher priced side. Just feel good knowing you are supporting your local economy and not the large factory style growers and producers.

How to know where are local farmers markets are?

Finding local farmers markets is usually pretty easy and here are the ways I have found markets in various areas in the past.

Local listings boards

Go to the local library or public events boards often dotted around the local area. Just simply look at a few of these boards and often you will see farmers markets advertised. I have found some great little markets on these boards.

Local papers

In the back of any local weekly newspapers you will often find craft fairs, garage sales and farmers markets listed.

Online

There are two things I would try to find local farmers markets online. Firstly I would just type in a search into Google and Bing. For example type in Google “farmers markets in Burlington, Vermont”. This particular search brings up a large variety of options from the Vermont Agricultural society with farmers markets listings and individual markets details. Secondly I would go to LocalHarvest.org. They list not just farmers markets but farms, CSA delivery services, Coops and more. It’s an excellent resource. Typing Burlington, Vermont into the search with Farmers Market selected brought up 5 results with great detailed descriptions.

Asking at farms

I wouldn’t suggest you randomly drive around looking for farms to ask but if you see a farm why not stop by and ask someone there what local farmers markets they know of? They may even have a well priced good quality farm shop of their own or have produce to sell you direct.

What are your best farmers market finds?

I would love to know where the best farmers markets are that you have found and also what your best finds at those markets have been. I have found some excellent pickled items in the past from fiddleheads (they were new to me at the time), pickled kale and just plain od but amazingly yummy pickled chilli onions.

I look forward to your feed back as always, thanks for reading.

You get good deals in local farmer markets but one should be motivated to drive through for your weekly purchases.
