One of the first things I started looking into when I was looking to save money was wood working plans. I was looking for a plan to build a new bed for an apartment that I had just purchased and did not have the money for expensive furniture.
I never did make that bed, however ever since then if I need something then I try and find plans and see if I can build it myself or pay someone to build it for cheaper than buying the piece already assembled.
Personally I think wood work is a very fun hobby and for anyone frugal it’s a great way to save money and even make some money if you get good at it.
One of the best looking complete wood working plans packages that I have come across is woodworking4home. The package is quite simply jam packed full of more stuff than you could EVER build yourself. Over 1400 items and counting in fact!

Being married to a pro in construction, it isn’t uncommon for me to have tables, shelves, or desks built instead of purchased. However, one thing that he considers to be a real pain to construct is anything with drawers.
If you are looking for good ways to build some of your furniture yourself, and purchase some, I recommend you look into the simplest pieces for DIY construction. You can build desks, shelves, dining tables, nightstands, etc., pretty simply. But when it comes to a dresser or an office pedestal, I recommend Ikea!

@Megan, for non carpenters I think complex projects can be achieved but may be a long slow project for fun more than practicality.
