Zagat’s World Best Movies
Posted on by Forest in General, Movies & Videogames, Opinion
Zagat recently released what they consider to be the top 1000 movies of all time in their Zagat’s World Best Movies book. I love watching movies so wanted to find out what they had at the top of their list and maybe set myself the challenge of watching them all.
One of the things I love about movies is that they give me an immense amount of entertainment and exercise all my emotions. With the fact that it’s easy to get them streamed via services like Netflix, OnDemand or just by popping down to the video store it makes for an affordable and fun night in. I love the kinds of lists Zagat has compiled too as it pits the thoughts of everyone else against my own movie likes and dislikes.
To create the list in the book Zagat surveyed 20,773 people who voted on their website Zagat.com. The book rates each movie on their 30-point scale that has four categories: Overall Quality, Acting, Story and Production Values.
Zagat’s World Best Movies top 20
I have not grabbed the book yet but luckily Zagat published the top 20 on their site Zagat.com. I took a look over them and decided to post them with some brief comments.
- 1) The Godfather (1972) – Amazing and intense movie. Pacino is just amazing in this movie, or was that in Godfather part II! Not sure this is the best but it is a damn good movie.
- 2) The Godfather Part II (1974) – As I kind of mentioned in the comment above Godfather I & II do merge together for me and they are both absolutely stunning movies. Don’t forget DeNiro’s turn in this movie and of course Brando. I love the fact that these movies supposedly changed the way the mob behaved as they wanted to be more like the characters in the movies!
- 3) Casablanca (1942) - I feel embarrased to say this but I have never seen this movie but it is now on my list!
- 4) Schindler’s List (1993) - Awesome film with one of my favorite actors (Ralph Fiennes). Even if not fully historically accurate the sentiment in this film makes it deserving to be on this list.
- 5) Lawrence of Arabia (1962) – Again, another I have not seen but one I have to one day very soon. Sometimes these classics do feel like a burden to get take the time out to watch but often they don’t dissapoint.
- 6) To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) – Not seen it or read the book, shame on me!
- 7) Star Wars (1977) - I prefer round three of these movies but they don’t reach my top 20 partially because there are so many better Sci Fi movies out there and Mark Hamil is a terrible actor.
- 8) The Wizard of Oz (1939) - Actually really good even though it’s a bit olde fashioned. Never done the Dark Side of the Moon thing though, have you?
- 9) Lady Eve (1941) – Never even heard of this movie! Must watch it.
- 10) Singin’ in the Rain (1952) – I can’t stand musicals but maybe just maybe in the name of the list I will make myself watch it!
- 11) Rear Window (1954) - I recently started catching up on my lack of Hitchcock viewing and can’t wait to see this movie.
- 12) It Happened One Night (1934) - Again sadly never heard of this movie either!
- 13) Citizen Kane (1941) - I found this movie a bit pompous and boring to be honest. Mr Welles did a great performance but it could have run a lot shorter.
- 14) Shawshank Redemption (1994) – Well what can be said for this movie! For me a top 5 for sure although may need a re-watch as I have not seen it for years. The line “He crawled through a river of sh*t and came out clean on the other side” sticks with me.
- 15) All About Eve (1950) – Had to scroll up as thought this was on the list already. Another I have never heard of before!
- 16) The Pianist (2002) – (oops, I original got this confused with The Piano so talked about the wrong movie. I have not seen the Pianist but here Brody put in a hell of a performance so plan to see it). *Mistaken original comments* – This movie was pretty good but I did not find amazing. Although the talks afterwards made it grow on me. The representation of Natives, the connotations towards sex, rape and domination. This movie is deep and interesting and a feminists playground.
- 17) African Queen (1951) - Not seen and don’t know much about it but must watch.
- 18) Third Man (1949) – I know this is a classic I must see very soon!
- 19) Finding Nemo (2003) – Pixar can’t do any wrong but I don’t thing Nemo should have been the one to make this list. I can’t deny it is a great film but for pure film making genius UP beats it for me. The first time I felt such intense sadness from a cartoon ever and Nemo didn’t do that to me at all!
- 20) Dr. Strangelove (1964) - I love the Pink Panther movies but never saw Sellers in this movie. I will pick up this movie very very soon.
I don’t agree with the list a whole lot but as you can see I have probably seen less than half of them. I expected a few more modern movies and no foreign film (that I can see) made the cut so I don’t know if the list was for USA movies only. 20k people can’t be wrong though, right? I must complete watching every movie on this list.
What do you think of the “Zagat’s World Best Movies” list and what would you have put in?

Hi Stlfan, well a large part of my blog is reader interaction. This list interested me because I want to complete it so I think it’s fair to talk about it here. It’s not like I am running a newspaper or anything here, it’s a blog!
Of course I want to and will be watching movies like Casablanca very soon.

No, you seriously are an idiot. First of all you are borderline-illiterate: “too”, meaning “also”, has two “o”s. Al Pacino does not spell his last name with an “h”. It’s Italian, not Spanish. And why do you even feel it necessary to comment on these movies when you have not even seen more than half of them?

I didn’t have to place comment but I wanted to and it’s my blog where I like to encourage interaction from my readers. Sorry about the errors, I rushed it a bit too much but will be going over and fixing them asap.

No, Forest. You’re not an idiot because of the your film rankings, you’re an idiot because you have no business having an open opinion about a subject you know absolutely NOTHING about. You’ve never heard of “All About Eve”, you’ve never seen or read “To Kill a Mockingbird”. Never seen “Dr. Strangelove”, “Casablanca”, “The African Queen” or “Singing in the Rain.” And yet you call yourself a film critic. THAT is what makes you an idiot.
Maybe you’d like to hear my opinion on Quantum Psychics? Oh, wait…I don’t know anything about Quantum Physics, but why should that stop me for rendering an opinion? IDIOT!!

For number 16 – I think you are confusing this with The Piano. The Pianist was the Roman Polanski movie about a Polish Jewish pianist. Adrian Brody won the academy award for his performance.
It is amazing – depressing but amazing

I have done the Dark Side of the Moon Thing with Wizard of Oz and I will honestly tell you that I don’t believe that it’s all coincidence. Pink Floyd must of made the album in a way to intentionally sync up because otherwise there is no way it would fit together the way it does. If I remember correctly you are supposed to start the cd on the 2nd (or maybe third) MGM Lion roar at the beginning of the movie.

Excuse please, if you propose to compile a list of the best of
anything, but havn’t even seen or read some of the classics
of the given genre, how do you have the balls to serve as critic. I cite Dr, Strangelove as a prime example, one of the most cleverly written scripts of all time. That’s universal knowledge to anyone in the film industry for the past 40 some years.

Dear Forest,,
Why do you feel it’s necessary to give your commentary on this list of movies in which you haven’t even heard of half of them? I guess on the internet everyone’s a critic and somehow has the authority to give their opinion however unqualified. Where did you go to film school?

Lists are so hard to make and have people agree. I can’t argue with any of these, i would put up a couple, but they are so many good ones it is hard to argue. I would consider Unforgiven. I think it is certainly one of the best westerns ever made. Also, Bladerunner still holds up very well but might be more of a top 50. Rear Window is probably Stewart’s best movie but, how is Its a wonderful life missed, or my favorite of his which is Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. I am suprised i have only not seen two of these. Third Man and Lady Eve. I actually haven’t even heard of them. I will have to see if i can find them. I like the list though.

Forest
11. Nov, 2010
I agree Jesse. Zagat made this list probably knowing they would get some stick for it but at least it came from info gathered from 20k of their users.
Unforgiven and Bladerunner are both fantastic movies.

I can’t believe Schindler’s List is ahead of Lawrence of Arabia. It’s a good film, but it ain’t that freakin good…LOA is superior in storyline, script, direction, music and of course cinematography. There a LOT of films better than SL. Examples: Gandhi, Ben Hur, and Gone With the Wind, just to name a few.

Please please please don’t give movie opinions anymore. Especially when you haven’t seen any of the classics that any true appreciator of film would have seen long ago.
And for the few movies you HAVE seen, you only commented on the acting or the story, and completely left out anything about the filmmaking or visuals – which is what film is all about.
And the Zagat’s list is pretty shallow and not that good.

Hey JB, I am sure you are yet to have seen all the classics either! The thing is this article was made to show my readers the list and my intent to watch all the movies on the list (and catch up with the classics I missed). As I get older I am appreciating the classics more but it takes a while to catch up.
My comments were quick but yes I could have expanded on the film making side a lot. One of my favorite films for beauty was Raise the Red Lantern and also Stalker but I also love the starkness and clean image of many 1960′s movies like The Spy Who Came in from the Cold.

Wow, what a great list of movies!! most in my top Five…and most you’ll be sorry if you miss seeing. I love it that so many classic films have been saved. The question is really, Is there a such a thing as a universal top 20? No not really. To many great movies from different eras, and to many people not willing to watch Movie’s from the past. What one movie someone finds boring and will inmaturely dog, someone else will watch several times and sing it’s praises. Wouldn’t it be a shame if the genrations of today didn’t go back and watch the films made in the past. What a rich history we have in film. I always told my kids, Hollywood didn’t just start making films the day you were born!! Whenever we were somewhere, and I saw a picture of an Actor from the past, I would tell them I would give them 5 Dollars to tell me who it is..So they started learning about Bogie, Hope, Hepburn, Kelly..etc, in doing so learned to love them and their films.

Wow, there are a bunch of sour pusses on this comment thread. But I guess people are very passionate about their movies.
For me, Roots should be on this list. It was amazing and immortalized a time that shall never be forgotten.
Avatar will make this list in the future as the world is able to put into perspective the marvouls things they did in this moving to revolutionize the film business.
Ii loved Nemo, but can’t believe it actually made the list. Zagot is really uppity and didn’t think they would give such a rank to this type of movie.

I know Freddie, some people just don’t know how to act in public cussing and swearing and things rather than discussing!
Roots is a brilliant piece of cinema that should never be forgotten and will probably be re-made and maybe ruined soon.
Agreed Avatar may make the list but with 2 planned sequels they might kill their own fire a bit!

Hey David, I personally don’t like Gone With the Wind but many people have expressed in these comments that it should be up there. You all made good points appraising the movie list but I believe there are too many outstanding (awesome) movies out there that would not get justice unless you catagorize the movies into different groups then you could begin to have good list. Furthermore it would particially alleviate people from getting upset because there favorite isn’t listed. For example; a sci-fi buff would not like to see a movie like “The Pianist” listed ahead of or rated higher than “Avatar” and so on for each catagory.
P.S. I am also a great fan of “Ben Hur” and my personal favorite movie in this class is the Ten Commandments.

This is my first exposure to this blog and I like the lively nature of the comments. As far as the original article, I thought it was well written because the author was honest about the basis for his comments. He didn’t claim to be an expert on film or even knowlegable only that he enjoyed film and was looking forward to finding out the contents of the list so that he could expand his own viewing range.
As far as the list itself, there is no way to know how Zagats compiled but since it came from a survey I would guess that the list is skewed to the opinion of that demographic of individuals who fill out surveys. Probably under 25 and over 65. Surely not experts. That would somewhat explain the content of the list.
As far as the Author’s comment about Citizen Kane, Many people include that on best movie lists only because it is taught to them. However, I’ve seen it several times and definately consider it so, Not because it hasn’t been surpassed in quality, but because it was so groundbreaking in advancing filmmaking technology. The basis of most of modern filmmaking finds its roots in that film. As I see it there two catagories; films made before Citizen Kane and those that came after!

Hi Stormcat, thank you for hitting my point on the head. Many people attacked me here and I think they missed what I was trying to do. I wanted a discussion around the movies not a bash the write fest, ha ha!
I think what you said about Citizen Kane is totally true. He pioneered a lot of new cinematic techniques for that movie and truly is a one of a kind. It just doesn’t sit too well for me from a story perspective but I have a lot of respect for it as a piece of groundbreaking art.

Paring the list down to 20 is an almost impossible task. There are literally hundreds that could be on the list.
I work for a Library, and I select the videos for our collection.
I always have more titles to buy than I have budget to buy with. As such I scour multiple review resources to find the best videos to add to the collection. I have almost all of the titles listed in the above comments in my collection and am saddened by the fact that few people check them out.
If you don’t visit your local Library for video titles you are missing a bet.

Greatest movies of all time can only be subjective. What one man’s “greatest” is another’s ” good”.
