Blockbuster game rental is a reality. A real game changer!…
Yesterday (10th August 2010) Blockbuster Video released a press release detailing their new addition to the Blockbuster By Mail online rental service. Now you can rent games at Blockbuster for the 3 major platforms Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii as well as Xbox and Playstation 2.
After struggling to keep up with Netflicks online rental service it looks like Blockbuster have tried to take the lead and now become the only online rental service to offer a full range of Movies, TV Shows and Video Games and all starting from as little as $8.99 per month for unlimited rentals. This is awesome!
Previously Gamespot were the only online rental service to offer games.
How To rent games at Blockbuster
I used to love going to Blockbuster back in the old days of the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo to rent a game for the weekend. The reason this worked for me as a kid was because I could afford a rental but could not afford to buy a game. It also allowed me to try out new titles and if I really loved a game I could save up for it.
Now with Total Access offering games as part of the standard package this gives a whole new dimension to the rental procedure for games and gives people a chance to try out games and saves them from buying full versions only to find out they won’t like it later. Also for serious gamers it could help curb any game buying habits.
The rental system is simple. You just sign up for the Blockbuster Total Access online rental program which starts at $8.99 a month. Then just as you would with Movies or TV Shows you add the games to your online queue and they get sent out as they have them.
Another unique selling point with Blockbuster’s Video Games rental is that you have the ability to take the games back to a real store and exchange for a movie or a cut price rental game all as part of your Total Access package.
What Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, PS2 and Xbox Games will be available from Blockbuster?
Blockbuster’s press release stated that 3000 game titles are currently ready for rental across all the featured platforms. That’s a pretty broad range to start with and looking at their site it looks like it includes many of the newest releases. It’s expected that new releases will come by weekly as they do for movies and knowing Blockbuster they may well nail a few exclusive deals with some distributors too.
Blockbuster Games New Releases: I keep a post of Blockbuster New Releases updated weekly on this blog and hopefully from next week I will ensure it is updated with a list of new game releases.
So what next?
This is a great leap forward in the world of online rental and spells great news for fans of Blockbuster Total Access and Netflix. It’s likely Netflix will release and online game rental service to be integrated with their current rental service as soon as they can and who knows Redbox may even start adding a few games to their kiosks soon….
